To buy at Boardwalk or not to buy?

Hi,

We stayed this year at the Boardwalk Inn and fell in love with it and we are thinking of purchasing there but we are hesitant because it expires well before all the others (Jan. 31, 2042). We know it would be a resort we could stay in every year but really like the idea of a 2057 or 2060 expiration year, so our future kids can enjoy it (Boardwalk expires in my 40's and SS/AKV expires in my 70's). Unless I'm wrong and if you purchase now they extend the contract? What would you do?

Sorry for the very long intro...

Thanks!!!

I think your math may be a little off. The difference in resorts expiration is around 15 years but your age difference is 30.

As for the shorter expiration, I was okay with it. I don't know what I will want down the road and while it is just my opinion without any facts, I do believe they will offer an extension to the end date like the did for OKW. Obvioulsy you have to pay for the extension and for you may make other properties more attractive.

Sorry I meant to say in my late 50's, whoops!!!

I wonder how much they charged members to extend their contract on OKW?

If you plan on staying there only and can book 8-11 months out then you should buy there. 11 for the more popular times and a BW or ST. view.
if you go in the off months or are flexiable as to when you go the BW is not that difficult to get at the 7 month window now but that can change. for off times we have been able to get a ST. view or BW view poular times only a few off days were open at the 7 month mark.

I would buy based on what you want and will use now, not what might happen when your kids are grown. Even if DVC offers a contract extension for BWV, there's just no telling whether your children would want to use it.

None of us knows what will happen in 30 years' time. DVC may have been sold by then, WDW may no longer be the popular destination that it is now. Your children may want to vacation elsewhere, or may not be able to take on the burden of the maintenance fees.

If you love the Boardwalk area, and you'd most enjoy spending your vacations at BWV, buy there. There's no point in spending thousands of dollars to buy into a resort you don't really care for.

they asked for $25 per point. most extenders actually paid $15 per point - due to a $10 discount - for a 15 year extension to 2057.

it was a high price relative to benefits that were a long way down the road. as dean says, even if they do offer an extension for BWV - which depends somewhat on what the hotel division wants to do with BWI over the next century - don't expect the price to seem reasonable.

BTW, did you visit the BWV model that was on the boardwalk? the BWV rooms are different than the BWI rooms, even if the location is pretty much the same.

Any date is open for us but next year I would really like to stay at Disney during Christmas time (it's been a dream I had since I was 10, lol).

Yes, we visited the model they had open at the BWV. We thought it was great, they obviously aren't as fancy as AKV. But we love the ambiance and the amount of entertainment at the resort and the proximity to 2 theme parks. Though I did hear that they might or will be remodeling the BWV soon, anyone heard anything on this?

They are remodeling it right now...but don't expect big changes. Remodels keep the flavor of the resort the same, and might replace the carpet or couch or pictures - but with a similar feeling carpet or couch or pictures.

If standard view or boardwalk view is something you want to get regularly at the Boardwalk, buy at the Boardwalk. If your heart will be broken if you call at seven months and nothing is available at the Boardwalk, buy at the Boardwalk. I'd rather spend 30 years at the resort I want, than 45 years regretting where I did buy. However, if you can be content at another resort, you'll probably be able to get SOMETHING at the Boardwalk more often than not as a non-owner.

I wonder if they are going to install new flat screen TV's and granite counter tops?

Thanks everyone, this really helps us...

We bought at BWV (our 4th resort) because it is simply where I love to stay. They say buy where you want to stay and I think it has the best theming of any DVC.

If they extend, great, otherwise I will stay there until they kick me out

I know that there are advantages to having a contract that lasts an extra 15 - 18 years can be tempting.

However, I believe that you should buy where you know you will love to be. We started out buying resale at VWL, thinking it would be okay to start and then would just add on at BLT, our real first choice.

But, after only 2 months, I realized I really wanted to just own at BLT so I sold VWL and bought all my points where I know I will be happy.

If you know BWV is for you, I say buy there. If you are not sure if you would be okay at one of the other resorts that expires later, then I would take a trip to one of those before buying.

If you find that staying at, say AKV, would not be that bad, if you could not trade out to BWV, then I would consider the expiration date.

Good luck!

I agree with previous posters -- if you only want to stay at BWV and can plan your trips 11 months out, buy there.

Buy where you want to stay. Walking distance to Epcot and DHS is a huge advantage in my opinion.

BWV is a awesome place....for your FIRST purchase!:rotfl: Be aware of the disease called addonitis. It can affect anybody and can come upon you quite suddenly.:goodvibes
Supposedly, the appliances, furniture, lamps, artwork, wall fixtures, televisions and dvd playesr are all being replaced. I don't know about the countertops and carpet.
