Sorry to ask just looking for suggestions... how do you get the smell of urine out of a mattress??

Have you tried that enzyme you can get at the petstore for cat urine? I would think it would get rid of human urine as well as it gets rid of cat urine.

Maybe sprinkle baking soda on the stains :confused3

If the pee is fresh, pet enzyme will work. Go to Petsmart or Petco and buy the cheapest store brand (it's ALL the same stuff). First, mop up as much of the stain as you can, then pour enzyme cleaner directly onto stain. Let dry.

If the urine is OLD, and I mean like months old, then use vinegar. Your mattress will smell like vinegar, but it's better than smelling like pee.

it's not months old, just from today.. my Mom lives with us and she didn't tell me about it. I went in her room to get something and almost passed out! I've washed the sheets and sprayed Febreeze everywhere, I may wind up mattress shopping this weekend!

The enzyme will work then. First, dry the stain as well as you can. Use a rag and blot HARD. Then soak, and I do mean SOAK, the area in enzyme. No smell once it dries. The pet enzyme stuff has both an enzyme and bacteria in it. Eats up the smell entirely.

If you think you might have this problem again, I suggest a mattress cover. We put them on our mattresses years ago, and it has certainly saved us this problem in the past.

Just to echo the other posters....use the pet enzyme cleaner. Two really good ones are Simple Solution (the one I use--I like the smell) and Nature's Miracle. Both are good, although I may hunt the store brand and try it on the recommendation of snarlingcoyote.

A bonus for the enzyme cleaner--you can use it in the wash to get rid of urine odors. I always wash my doggie bedding and towels with a cup or so of this in the wash. Can also use it in your steam cleaner. Good luck.

Oh, and try the waterproof mattress zipper bag after the mattress is thoroughly dry. You can get a soft comfy cover to put over this so it doesn't feel like sleeping on a rubber sheet. I have both the mattress and box spring in the bags. Yes, my 13-year-old male has some leg-lifting issues. I know pee.

Jockaroo is right. In fact, the peeing cat sprayed down one of my hoodies yesterday. I found it this morning, dumped it in the wash, poured in some enzyme, a little soap, washed it. Good as new. We routinely use it to wash the dog bedding and the slipcovers and mix it with water (and shampoo) in our carpet shampooer.

It works on vomit, pee, poop and blood stinks (but not stains), so long as they are fresh.

On old, set in, smells, I'm a fan of vinegar. On paper that's gotten peed on (Yes, it has happened - to a COURT document, of all things!:scared1: ) I skip the enzyme and soak the darned thing in straight vinegar and let it dry.

Lighter fluid and a match.

Oh, and do this outside, not in the bedroom.

White fuming nitric acid. It will get rid of the odor, the mattress, the floor underneath...

first dont pee on the mattress. otherwise, throw it out and buy a new one. it is good for the economy.

thanks, I will tell my 72 year old mom that. (I'm sure you are kidding?? :goodvibes )

It may be TMI, but as the owner of a sometimes-inappropriately-peeing cat, I'm glad you asked the question, coolbeans! Thanks for the suggestions, everybody! :)

Can you scrub the mattress with diluted bleach? When my dog was a puppy, she had a big accident right on our mattress, and I doused it with Clorox CleanUp spray & water, scrubbed it very well, then my DH brough a wet/dry vac and got any moisture out. It may sound excessive but it worked. After the mattress was vacuumed and dry, I sprayed it with Lysol spray and it's fine.

I was thinking about this and thought something like a "Spray-n-Wash" type product would work because of the enzymes used to remove stains. We use something "advanced" (forget the name but it's in a small blue bottle). That might work.

Oof, this brought back memories of late last week, when the most evil of the three cats in our house decided to pee on my DD's boyfriend's hoodie. How embarrassing! :headache: We had the Simple Solution stuff (since this is NOT this first time we've found peed-on stuff) and I washed it with that stuff while they were at the school dance, and the smell was completely gone when I took it out of the dryer.

Last time we had to deal with something similar, I put vinegar on the wet areas and then overlaid the whole wet patch with baking soda. I then put a towel over the area and applied pressure to help absorb. When it was dry I vacuumed it up and repeated the process. The spot was gone and so was the smell. It was time consuming though, so it might not work in your case if you need the bed soon.
