Ok, so I need this TIVO thing explained to me. Do you just buy a box? How much does that run? Do you have to have digital cable, or will normal cable work just fine? Is there some sort of monthly fee for it?

Thanks!

This is what I know about it.

We have Direct TV. Our Tivo box was bought at Best Buy for $99.00. It basically replaced our old living room receiver. Our Monthly fee for Tivo is $5/month that is added onto our Direct Tv bill.

I know there are Tivo boxes for specific things ie)regular tv, cable, dish, etc. but don't know any specifics.

Hope I helped out a little.:D

A stand alone TiVo that is not part of a DirecTV system costs $199 for a 40 hour recorder. Then you have a choice to pay for the TiVo service all up front for the life of the recorder (that costs $300) or pay a monthly fee of $13.95.

I got my Tivo for Christmas in 2001, and I LOVE it! Mine is an older version, so I only have a 20 hour recorder, but it works well for me. I do the monthly payment option also. I really can't say enough how great TiVo is. Here is a link to their website with lots of info and FAQ's: TiVo

We have it and love it! It is just a box thing that your cable connects to. You can have regular television, satellite, digital cable or just a tv antenna. Ours we just got a Circuit City for $199.00 with a limited time $50.00 rebate so only $149.00 for the 40 hour limit. It is SO nice to have when you have kids and you want to watch a show you can pause live tv and it will keep a 30 min buffer in front so you dont miss anything. We paid the fee upfront for the $300.00 because after something like 19 months of the service fee it was cheaper and we figured we'd have it at least that long. We connected it to our phone line and during the night once a week it updates programs for the tv guide. We use the pause feature all the time when watching sports and you can even do slow motion (like on a basketball dunk or something). Also you can pick programs to record by time, channel, name, actor or whatever. We are big fans of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm and Sex and the City. We set a season pass for it and it just auto records it and will filter out the reruns and it does not record those. We dont even have to think about it anymore..we just set the shows we love and let it go.

It sounds really complicated but really it is much easier than a vcr and no worry about tapes being rewound or new.

We also have Tivo and love it....I have the 80 hr version...got it on clearance at Best Buy and had a rebate....$250 plus $300 for the lifetime .....like poster above said after about 19 months you've paid for your subscription....

Silly question.....if you have DirecTV and buy TiVo, do you need a DirecTV installer to come to your house and install or can you install it yourself?

:sunny:

you should be able to install it yourself. I know we did with Digital Cable without the help of the cable company but then my hubby understands all of it...I on the other hand do not. I can barely figure out how to change the input on the tv so I couldnt help you install but I am sure you can do it without Direct Tv coming out....It's kind of like hooking up a vcr if that helps.

Thank you for calling DirecTV, this is Chris how may i help you..?

Ok if you buy the dvr from directv, last time i looked at the promo page it was 99.00 and 25.00 shipping. you go on a 1 year commitment to total choice or above and only pay 4.99 a month for the recording service, If your have preimer ( 85.99 or 87.99w/locals) the recording features are free. Installation comes with the purchase price as it should with any dtv equip you buy from anyone despite its features

If you have directv please do not buy a stand alone tivo you will pay more for it up front and the monthly cost of it is 7 dollars more than it is from dtv. the ONLY cost saving is if you can do the lifetime oprion TIVO provides.

If you have any further questions concerning DTV I've worked in the customer service area for 3 yrs now PM me or mail me at disneyvk@cox.net
