TITAN A.E. all over Again.........for Disney

From a business point of view, I understand why they make the sequels, and don't really have a problem with it. What I do have a problem with is them blurring the line between the 2nd rate sequels (yes, they are ALL 2nd rate when compared to the originals*) and the original releases.

They blur this line by marketing compilations of TV quality cartoons as "original movies", and by releasing the sequels in theatres. This does great damage to the Disney brand.

Return to Neverland may have been one of the better sequels, and it may have made a tidy $20-30 million profit at theatres, but audiences knew it was not of the same overall quality or appeal as originals like L&S and Monsters.

Everytime Disney releases an animated film that does not "hit" with theatrical audiences, it reduces the trust that exists in the Disney name. When you release one or two original films every year, you are bound to have some duds, but why make it worse by releasing sequels, which are virtually guaranteed duds?

Make the sequels if you must, Disney, but keep them direct to video, or made for TV. You can make your profits without doing so much damage to your reputation.

*Toy Story 2 is the only exception to this, but was made by Pixar, who made every effort to make the sequel better in every way than the original. The same cannot be said of Disney's efforts.

Given that Titan AE (which I really enjoyed and watched several times after it came to cable) flopped....why DID disney make Treasure Planet? The "sea ship in space" concept is so farfetched that I haven't been able to raise interest to go see it. They could have just cast the story on earth and made it believable.

If Disney was willing to make a teenage or adult cartoon the Snow Queen by Joan D Vinge could make a good cartoon. It has all the necessary elements. An apparently evil immortal queen (snow), the love interest of the heroine turned to "the darkside" , and the good girl punished for her religious beliefs...and then the relevation of the secret behind the good girl who eventually becomes the Summer Queen. Disney artists could have a field day with the scenery and costumes. Unfortunately it would be a 3 or 4 hour movie...or a 13 part series.

YES!

Make something like a "Snow White II" for "The Wonderful World of Disney" show. I'd watch that. Most of the sequels would carry more respect and generate more interest if they were "Straight to TV" instead of "Straight to the toilet" like they are now. If they got good at it, maybe they could make more from merchandising and advertising and THEN DVD sales. Drop in the proper marketing and viewership could skyrocket, which may in turn create a renewed interest in everything Disney. ABC could use the boost too.

I blame it all on "Pooh" and the barrage of successful video titles it produced.
