Really, are there any decent HONEST hard working mechanics left out there?? I am so tired of dealing with the stories, the excuses, the lame attempts to cover their own ineptitude...

We bought a '99 Jetta last week. It had a few issues (needed new plugs and wires, water pump and timing belt replaced, and four new tires). Our mechanic gets the car Friday morning and assures us it will be done by Monday since "business is slow" and there aren't any other projects in the garage.

I don't have to tell you that it is now Wednesday afternoon and for the THIRD day in a row we are assured that "the car will definitely be ready tomorrow".

I think they are trying to pad the labor bill by dragging it out, or they are inept and don't know how to work on a foreign car (we've had American cars in the past and they've been able to handle everything with them). In fact, DH had to call them to remind them NOT to replace the tranny fluid and radiator fluid as VW's require special fluid...mechanic did not know this.

Either way, I think we are done with them. Sad really. With the economy in the crapper you'd think these guys would be doing nip-ups to keep the customer happy and to retain us. DH has been trying to call since 4pm to talk to the manager, but the office guy likely tipped him off that we were looking for him for answers and the phone has been busy (i.e. off the hook for almost an hour now).

So tired of rip off artists, jerks and dishonest business people. Also, i'm afraid to complaint too much as they do have our car and could do something stupid with it. NOt having a car has completely ruined the day as ALL of our plans revolved around getting the car today. BTW, we already sold our old one and now have just the farm truck.

UGH!!!

We drove 2 hours to have our car repaired by a friend who is a mechanic in PA. If you find an honest one, support him. Tell your friends. Keep him in business. They are few and far between...

The mechanic does sound kind of shady. However, Volkwagons aren't like most cars. Unless things have changed significantly in the last few years, it's harder to find a good mechanic for a Volkswagon than for most other cars. (At least the major ones - the big three, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan. . . maybe not the lesser known brands or luxury cars.) We finally decided not to get any more Volkswagons even though we like them just because the maintenance was such a pain.
