I joined this board last year as we were planning a trip to DW. In an effort to pay back all that I learned, I thought I could share a few tips with all of you.

When thinking of when to plan the trip and considering various dates. Look at all all the Block out dates for the deluxe annual pass. Those are the busiest and most crowded days of the year. Weather is rarely a factor, I wouldn't let it influence your planning.

I was shocked when we got to DW and I saw how huge it is, and was very glad I decided to stay on property. With DL, when an off property hotel says it's at maingate, you can truly walk to DL. At DL you don't need to stay on property, the city shuttle service is a few bucks a day and stops at every hotel every 20 minutes. You will not need a car unless you are planning on going beyond disney. I wouldn't spend the money to rent it on the days you will be at at DL.

DL is very different from DW. Unlike DW where you have to book things WAY in advance, you should be able to get all the character dining, dining reservations, tours etc... as little as a few days before arrival. Holidays at DL are really, really crowded, prepare to wait 1-2 hours per ride.

You will get the most character greetings when you arrive at the maingate of DL prior to 4:00, look for more characters in front of Town Hall and Walt's movie theater.

Use your fastpasses! The lines for Indiana Jones, Space Mountain and Soarin can be well over an hour. Go immediately to these rides as you first arrive in the park.

Fantasyland, and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, can be well over an hour as well. No fastpass for this ride. Go there first thing in the am.

Have babies in diapers? Take a lesson from me. On Thanksgiving 3 years ago, we got stuck for 2 hours on Pirates. BRING diapers on all the rides!

Unlike DW, it is SO easy to park hop. It's a short walk to each park. If DL is too crowded go to DCA.

Did you know you could convert your park hopper to annual passes at the end of your trip? We do this every year. For example, we do like to go over the holidays, even though it is unbelievably crowded. We typically buy deluxe passes, but the last 2 weeks in December are blocked out. so we buy the 5 day park hopper and at the end of our trip add a few bucks to it and get our deluxe annual passes. We get to go during the holidays and all throughout the rest of the year. Just keep in mind this is only for when you are buyinmg new passes. We just let them expire, so we can take advantage of this!

Please feel free to ask more questions! I have been to DL over a 100 times and yet, I still find new things on this board.

Have a Disney Day! :cheer2:

Great post, thanks! How would I find these black out dates to avoid? And also, how do I find out what groups are planning big conferences at what time of the year? THANKS!

hi, i was wondering if you knew if any time march or late feb is a good time to go, i don't want big crowds as i have 2 small children.

Thanks for the report. I'm more of the DW vet...gone everyother yr. since 1987. But this will be my second trip to DL since 1990. I know things have changed alot.

We will be there from Dec. 27-Jan. 1. I know the crowds will be max out, but is that time really, really awful? Or does it matter...a day at a crowded DL is much better then a day at work. Even at that time can you do the major rides all in one day or better take 2?

Traffic around DL and LA how bad? We're from Houston with one of the busiest highway in the country...is LA about the same? 30 miles can take us 30 min. or 1.5 hrs. to get around on a normal day.

Thanks for your advice.

my remarks:

-Do not yell at any cast member. If they make a mistake, just simply correct it. No need to yell. CM are usually working around 60+ hours so they are very very tired during holidays. I myself got around 50 hours but i know i will get more since many and many ppl will be calling in sick. Be polite, if you do, CM will definately stuff above and beyond for you.

- i discovered a really good strategy on medium crowds... hit the Fantasyland rides in the morning, around 12, hit the fastpass lines... no matter what, you must have 1. you hit one, and you hit a low volume ride, then you hit another fastpass line for a fastpass to when your ticket says you can get another one, head to the 1st fastpass... head to your 3rd fastpass location, get another one at the time you can get it, hit the 2nd fastpass ride, and etc... works wonderfully

- Freeway freeway! Man, i cant tell you how much horrible drivers i see... heres the thing, if your being passed on the right, MOVE OVER!!! Even though the speed limit is set at 65mph, ppl tend to drive 80+. Cops drive 90+. Very far lane(not carpool) is around 80-90mph, the 2nd to the far lane is around 75-85mph, and so on.

I think Albort suggested the best game plan for hitting the rides. I usually avoid DL during the Xmas week. But, then I'm a local who also avoids Saturdays. I would just add that stay relaxed and don't try to push yourself to see and do everything. I think planning on 2 days for DL would be better. That way you can make sure you get a chance to see the parade, fireworks and Fantasmic.

Here's something I figured out a few years ago for IASW Holiday. Wait until the parade starts at Small World and then get in line. I have a feeling it will still be pretty packed, but much better than it usually is in the day/night.

Hmmm...This all depends on when and where you're going. I don't even want to go into how much time I've spent on the freeway going 5-10 miles...

cgoldburg, I seek your knowledge:
First, some background. We live in Pennsylvania. My sister lives in Orange County. Racking my brain for Christmas present ideas (I know, I'm cutting it close) Anyway, she is not a big theme-park fan, nor is she a Disney fanatic like myself. But recently she said she heard that the restaurant at the Disneyland Hotel is very nice. She probably would never spend the $$$ to go there, so I was thinking about providing her with info about it and adequate $$$ to have a nice meal. By doing this we could give a small gift of Disney magic. any info is appreciated, including name of restaurant, approximate meal cost, menu choices, etc.
Or, if you have any other suggestions for gift certificates I could give her for something different to do there. She's lived there almost 20 years so she has done pretty much all of the mainstream stuff...Getty (old & new), San Diego Zoo, Leno, Sea World, Tarpits, Malls. I'm not sure if she has been to DL, like I said, she is not a big Disney fan. I would never purchase a park pass for her; I don't think she would go

Thanks!
Christine

Hello, I am another DL veteran (former SoCal, now NoCal) who just discovered this board in preparation for our first Disney Cruise.

Anyway, I wanted to add that with our family we found the absolute best times of the year to go are in mid November (the week before Thanksgiving), and mid January (around MLK day). The park has almost always been empty when we've gone.

I'd also say use the FastPass. It's great.

That's probably Napa Rose, in the Grand Californian hotel. I've never eaten there but it gets great reviews. I'd suggest using Google to get more background.

Heres another tip, dont pay me in dimes and nickels and pennies... i will hate you for life ;)

I haven't been to my original post in a couple of weeks! Hope everyone's questions were answered and you all had fantastic holidays! We were at DL Dec 28th-Jan 1 and it was pretty nuts. We went there early on the 31st and rode several rides in a couple of hours. The park doesn't really get packed until about 11 am even on the busiest day of the year. The 1st was empty, we were on all rides in less than 30 minutes!

The blackout dates can be found on DL's website under annual passes. All other questions look like they were answered by helpful DIS boarders!
