Tips for visiting Washington, DC?

I've been living near DC for over 12 years now and love it. No matter which sites you decide to see you'll be happy. Should be crowded and the lines can be bothersome but it's worth the effort. It's too bad you're only spending 2 days here because you'll only be able to scratch the surface of all the sites.

Regarding the zoo...normally I wouldn't recommend going there but we have been blessed with four of the cutest baby cheetahs I've ever seen. Seeing them and the Pandas make the trip worth while. Take lots of pictures.

We went this past March. We stayed with my uncle in Arlington and rode the Metro and walked around everywhere. Just be ready for some worn out kids. DS (6 at the time), kept wanting DH to carry him on his shoulders. DH was worn out too by the time we left. DS favorite thing on the whole trip was seeing JFK's grave at Arlington. We did the big monuments on the mall (except Washington Monument was closed). We also did Air and Space on a rainy day. We went to Mt. Vernon one day (I thought it was really amazing to see George and Martha Washington's tomb).

I guess I could add a day. We were leaving Sat morning. We could leave Friday to ad some time. I honestly didn't know there was so much and I guess I thought the 5 year old would be too little (bored). We live only about 2-3 hours so we can go back too - maybe in an "off" season.
