Tips for Porters?

Just wondering how much is the typical tip that you give to the porters with the ship? Thanks!

Last time I checked it was $1.00 or $2.00 per suitcase. We usually round up to a higher amount. If we have 5 suitcases and a few carry ons I usually tip about $15.00 (this is for the porter that lug our suitcases out to the parking lot and loads our car or to airline area). When we drop our luggage off at the terminal I tip a bit more than $1.00 per bag as we usually take the luggage out of the car ourselves and then the porter takes it into the terminal from there.

We have never had bad service from a porter.

Hubby and I have two large, two small and we tip him $20 because they are fairly heavy.

We tip 2.00 a bag coming into port and then give the guy a 20 on the way home for gathering up our bags, wheeling them out and across the street to our car and packing the trunk with them!

Is it true this is primarily how these guys make their money, do they get a salary or wage aside from the tips, one told me that at the airport, he did so much cuz we were running late i left him a 20.00 because he got our passes and everything, is it true?

Don't toss my bags and bust up my luggage. Oh, wait, that's what happens at the airport!!

Really, if they take your luggage for you way out to the far parking lot, tip them well because they can't make as many tips. Even though this is on US soil - they're not paid much if anything at all (they might be "independent contractors"), tips is how they make their living!!

I think that I heard that they were trying to unionize, but I'm not sure and have no idea what the results of that effort were.

They are hourly. I believe 9hr from a private company.. And yes most of their income come from tips. And the amount of work they do is insane.

Why are you digging up all these old threads specifically related to tipping porters?
It was something i was thinking about after speaking with my sister who just recently cruised on the dream and cam up in conversation and wanted to see what situations others had.

Funny, on one of the other threads you wrote it like it was you who were cruising and had the experience:

Just stumbled across this thread. And just a little insight. The porters at the terminal are not employed by disney. And had a chance to speak with a few of them over the years... The porters are like a waiter, their hourly wage is not all that great so alot of their pay comes from tips. And apparently years ago the tips used to be superb. The young man that helped us on the way in also helped us with our luggage on the way out and explained to us the process of getting our luggage from point a to b. It was unreal all that they do. Depending on the day they may only get a couple families to help per day... I know im rambling but to put it to rest i tip them according to what i feel i would like to receive doing what they do.. We had 5 bags and tipped him $20 asked him if that was ok and he smiled and said yes and he really appreciated it.. I asked what was his normal tip he receives.. He responded as there is no normal. $20 and up used to be the norm years ago. But we get alot of people from all over the globe that dont normally tip where they are from.

It just seemed like you were on a mission to make sure we're all aware how hard the porters work and how much we should be tipping them.

Yes i have sailed with them before. My sister just got back on friday from the dream and it came up in conversation as she will be sailing again later this year.

just don't forget to tip. we ended up searching the ship that evening. When found all the tags had mysteriously disappeared.

Hmmm...I wonder if a porter joined the DIS today?

That was my thought. :rolleyes1

Yep...

It always amazes me the number of people who discuss the finances of the workers they interact with (porters, concierge hosts, servers, etc.). I was raised that discussions of salary, etc. are really not proper - especially with strangers.

Strange, I got a "like" here for a comment I made last night but mysteriously the comment has disappeared, anyone want to tell me why?

It's your reply to the other bumped thread that got a like, not this thread. Two old threads about tipping porters were bumped yesterday.

Question from a first time cruiser: Why would I need a porter?
I've traveled throughout Europe and North America most of my life by plane, stayed at all kinds of hotels (1 - 4 star), and never used a porter.

We need to use them bc we have more luggage than we can handle (family of 5). Not just in cruise ports, but other countries ' airports, they seem to get us through customs and to a cab much more easily than we ever could bc they know where we need to go and handle the ground transportation for us as well. My husband and I when traveling alone never use them. When we're with our three daughters, we always do. Just a matter of not breaking our backs since they use a cart and as I said, get us where we need to be much, much quicker since they're knowledgeable about the layout of airport / terminal.

Thank you for your answer. So it's not that a cruise-port is very different from an airport; you can walk to the check-in with your luggage? At the airport the airline then takes your luggage and it 'magically' ends up on the airplane. Is that how it works with cruising too?
