Being from the north as well I made this mistake on our December trip a few years ago. The temperatures swung from 50F-70F. 50 F to me is long pants and sweater weather, comfortably brisk. But the cold in the south hits a lot differently than in the north because of the humidity. Think about how much hotter it feels when it's humid, the same is true of the cold. I ended up wrapped up in my flannel coat, scarf, leggings under jeans and buying a hat + gloves to be comfortable. It was the weirdest trip and it wasn't as bad for DH but we definitely wouldn't have swam in that weather unless it was just the hot tub. I actually felt warmer outside at home at 30F so just make sure you're prepared either way. We'll go swimming even if it's 70 lol we'll be coming from Ontario which will be blanketed in snow and probably below zero at that point in time so anything will feel nicer than that!!
if it's truly miserable we'll resort hop and explore
