Tips for carrying on bags?

I did carry-on for a five week trip to Australia and we didn't always have laundromats available. But we made do with sink washes and the occasional laundromat.

It was difficult to make do with less liquids, but we (DH and I) shared solid shampoo and conditioner; I brought solid body lotion and a stick perfume. We shared deodorant and brought insert repellant and sunscreen when we arrived in Sydney.
I used products from LUSH (stores and mail order) and ordered from Minimus.
I love the Purex laundry soap sheets that also have fabric softener in them. So much easier than powdered laundry soap.

Sorry, I don't think your giant wheelie is more important than my backpack. The overhead is shared space and is first come first serve. They can ask that I move my ONE carry on but I am not sitting cramped with my knees in my chest with zero leg room so someone who decides to carry on a giant wheelie can stow it in the overhead bin. I was going to make a comment about this but see you already did. Hear hear!:worship:

OP, Be prepared to board the plane and possibly have to have them check your luggage due to no room in the overhead compartments. Seems that everyone has the same idea.

DH normally tries to fly southwest on business but had to fly Delta the last 2 flights. There were several carryons that had to be checked and both flight were late departing due to the difficulty of everyone trying to fit everything into the overheads.
The one flight, the attendant ask the gentlemen behind DH if he could put his backpack under the seat in front of him so she could fit a larger piece of luggage in. He refused and started giving the flight attendant a bunch of lip, about how he was an elite member, needs the leg room, ect ect.
She tried moving things around in several compartments finally got the other carryon in and when she closed the door said very loudly Thank you for your cooperation.
The guy started in on her again and ended with and I paid 1200 for this seat.
DH mumbled, not only are you an arrogant *** but your stupid too.
Everyone sitting around him started laughing.
Seems he didn't mumble.

Unless he had more than one item in the storage bin your DH was the one that was wrong. The gentlemans carry on does not need to be at his feet. If that is what he chose for a carry on even if it was only a back pack. If it was his additional personal item yes it should have been at his feet.

I have to agree. If all this man had was his backpack, he had every right to put it in the overhead. However, if he really said what it is stated he did, that was kind of rude and uncalled for. Although if you fly a lot, it does get really annoying watching people carry on so much stuff, all of which they stow in the overhead. Being asked to put your one and only item under the seat so they can do this would have been aggravating.

That said, if it had been me, I would have moved my backpack to under the seat in front of me with no comment.

If you board late with your giant bag be prepared to have it gate checked.

I was recently on a flight from Denver to IAD, flying in first class (unpaid upgrade), and the last person in first class boarded just before they closed the door. Of course there was no room in any of the overheads in first, nor was there room on the rest of the plane (note lots of the first class overhead space had been taken by economy PAX who stowed their luggage there while getting on the plane). He had to have his bag gate checked. He was pissed off, but at least had the grace not to protest too loudly. It was his own fault for boarding so late.

Totally agree. The PP's husband was in the wrong - had he not made that ignorant comment, he could come out as the "good guy" (or, at least, the "not wrong guy"), but with that comment he lost any dignity and respect he may have had.

Here's the deal your "status" just allowed you to delay an entire plane? LOL! What we have here folks is a well developed sense of "entitlement".

On behalf of other "elite" flyers let me aplogize for those of us who have this arrogant entitlement feeling. I admit it's fairly widespread but not universal!

Any time you feel the need to announce (A) your status or (B) how much your ticket cost please read what the poster's DH said and realize it applies to you! Flying more does not give us the right to be jerks! It's not a sign of some exaulted status. (And I am top tier on SEVERAL programs, but you would NEVER hear me mentiont that like this!)

Umm you too are here flaunting your elite status, i am a top tier on several air lines too do I now too get to have an opinion. If the plane is delayed because of gate checking baggage then so bet it. I am not traveling 3 hours with my knees on my chest so the gate agent doesn't have to check a bag and it saves 10 minutes. If it is a short haul, say IAH-DFW, then I might move it if you ask nicely, but as stated overhead is shared space and my backpack has every right to be in the overhead bin.

I agree with the PP.

The poster you quote is also showing grace and manners by not ranting at the flight attendant the way that passenger on the earlier poster's huband's flight did. again, a simple, "No, I can't do that." would have been more effective and left everyone - except, perhaps, those passengers who feel it necessary to publicize their status with the airline and how expensive their airfares are - feeling positive about the encounter.

Do you truly think, given the description by that poster, the whole process took less than the ten minutes you say it would have taken to gate-check the bag? Given that the FA first had to look for space, then interact with the Elite passenger including waste time listening to his diatribe, then continue looking for space and ultimately rearranging bags so this one would fit? How much time do you think was saved?
