Tips for carrying on bags?

DS and I are flying Delta our next trip and do not want to check a bag so that we will have $50 more to spend at WDW.

We could really use some packing tips since we will be there 8 days. Luckily it is August so we will be bringing light weight clothes. I'm most worried about the TSA liquid rule since we will need lots of sunscreen, lotion, and moisturizer.

Any helpful suggestions would be welcomed!

You can't take them in your carry-on unless they are under 3 oz and fit in your Ziplok bag. There aren't really any tips. Depending on how much sunscreen or other products you might need to buy on arrival (and where you're buying it), you might do as well to just check one bag.

Spray suncreen at the resorts and parks runs about $12 last time I bought some.

Unless you plan on doing laundry, I think it's going to be hard to pack 8 days for hot, humid Florida days where you're going to get your clothes sweaty. Additionally, there is ZERO workaround for the liquid rule when it comes to carryon for sunscreen, lotion and/or moisturizer.

The workaround is to pack containers of these items of 3.4 oz or less. All of these are available in this size. You can fit quite a few in a quart bag.

1. Sunscreen wipes
2. lotion bar
3. shampoo bars (or you can use the resort shampoo for a week)
4. bring your own hair conditioner in a travel size bottle
5. solid perfume (if you carry any)
6. the tiniest travel size mascaras, lip glosses and lip stick you can find (I usually find some on ebay, just before a trip)
7. mineral makeup (you can find tiny 3 gram jars that screw together to put it in). I usually carry a primer, foundation, two blushes, top coat, maybe six eye shadows, two eyeliner powders, and maybe a highlighter. I put them in those little three gram jars and screw them together to make two columns of makeup, each maybe 1"x1"x4" and my makeup takes up almost no room. Those columns, a travel size lipstick, a solid lip balm, eyelash curler, a small 2" flat glass dish for swirling, and a few travel size makeup brushes easily fit into a small Vera Bradley Kiss and Makeup bag.
8. Use packing folders and packing cubes to put clothes into. I can fold 9 days worth of clothes into one 18" packing folder which then fits perfectly into one side of my Heys spinner carry on. Just pack shorts/capris and tanks/tshirts in the thinnest material you can find.
9. I use a Vera Bradley trip kit or slim cube packing cube and roll up my underwear as tight as possible. Place them in the trip kit or slim cube, then roll up a thin nightgown tightly and put on top. Those bags/cubes will stretch. Then I roll my bras up tight and place them in another slim packing cube cube. Pack a swim suit and coverup in a small packing cube.
10. In another small packing cube, place a disposable razor, small brush, comb, lotion bar, sunscreen wipes, solid deodorant, Body Glide, travel size toothpaste, a folding toothbrush, and any other odds and ends.
11. Put camera and phone chargers in a small makeup size bag.
12. You can buy small 5 gram jars that screw together to make a column about 1 1/2"x 1 1/2"x3". Put your favorite moisturizer, eye cream, and night cream in three of them and screw them together to make a small column.
13. In 3-1-1 bag have just that tiny mascara, travel size lip glosses, and that column of moisturizer/eye cream/night cream, and a small bottle of hair conditioner.

The trip kit, slim packing cube, two small packing cubes, small bag with chargers, and a pair of comfortable flip flops will easily fit on the other side of the carry on with a little room to spare. In your personal item, put your paperwork in a small divider, sunglasses in sunglass case, makeup bag, cellphone, camera, small park bag, a few snacks, etc. Wear your biggest shoes. Limit shoe wear to the pair you wear and a pair of very comfortable flip flops that you pack.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear in my post, I meant that there is zero workaround if the intent is to bring full size bottles. Yes I agree you can fit a quite a bit in a quart bag and most items (although maybe not your favorite brand) can be found in small containers (or can be transferred into clearly labeled small containers - YMMV).

You do realize that you advised her to break the law...right?

As long as the poster is referring to the disposable shaving razors, those are permitted on carry-ons.

Yes...and you can also bring tweezers and small scissors now. It's the liquids that are the big deal.

Last year my DD got a rash on her face and we had to buy her some baby sunscreen in the resort gift shop. It was a regular size bottle and cost $15. If sunscreen is the only issue I would pack a carry on and pay the $15 for sunscreen...you are still saving a few dollars.

Unless I fly southwest, I never check a bag. I roll everything up tightly, and can fit a lot in a small suitcase. Then you can take a small backpack too, one for each person in your party. As for liquids...you can take as many 3 oz containers inside a quart size ziploc bag, and one for each of you traveling. For sunscreen, I get a lot of those small trial size coppertone tubes. If you use all travel size things, you can fit quite a lot in a quart size bag. maybe take some of those purex sheets just in case you need to do a load of laundry. For me, shoes are the biggest problem. I wear my clunkiest pair on the plane, and then squish the others in a plastic bag at the bottom of the suitcase and pack around them. Good luck!

Hi,
Flying Delta also and not sure I can get away without checking any bags?? Looking for suggestions----it's me, my wife and kids age 3, 5, and 8 for 9 days. Hoping I can get by with only 1 large check-in. Thanks!

I seldom try to do carryon for trips over 4 or 5 days. But I suppose you can do it. You are going to need to tightly roll your clothes. But remember, it's hot/humid in the summer so you are going to be changing clothes during the day...at least we do. Then, you are going to have to decide what toiletries you can make do with in the qt baggie. Toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, sunscreen, some deoderants, shave gel, some makeup, mouthwash, itchy cream....you get the idea....all have to be 3.5 oz or less. Sure, you can get a bunch of 3 oz sizes of sunscreen but you'll be using at least one a day if you use it properly. So...that's a fair amount of sunscreen in that baggie.

You are going to have to compromise on what you bring and what you can do without. You will be doing laundry, at least once. Otherwise you're either going to be bringing about 14 outfits or you're going to be pretty damp and yucky wearing the same clothes all day long. To me, it's well worth the cost to check one bag. But, that's just me. It is what it is.

Can you mail full size shampoo/sunscreen/etc bottles to your destination? I'm thinking that might cost about $15, still much cheaper than $50 times two for checking a bag.

Going a little OT....
We travel with just carry ons all the time...and have since the kids were 5, and old enough to roll their own luggage.

Our longest trip with just carry ons was Europe for 6 weeks, and we did just fine...rented a VW pop up camping van, and washed in the campground washer/dryers. And no, I'm not a camping girl, but European campgrounds amazed me with cleanliness and amenities.:goodvibes

Wear the "heaviest" stuff, hang everything up every night - you'll be amazed at how a good airing out refreshes clothing that's not too sweaty/awful:teeth:

Wear swimsuits under the kids clothes to the Parks...our favourite "ride" on a summer day is the play fountain area at Epcot - on the walk to the World Showcase straight ahead of Spaceship Earth...

...and enjoy the "lightness" of traveling without checked bags!!:goodvibes

Have fun!!

:)

It also depends on where you are getting the sunscreen for your trip. If you are heading to your local drugstore before you leave, you will probably pay about $8. So your additional cost for buying it at the hotel is only $7. Of course, if you ar like me and stock up on $1 sunscreen at the 99Cent Store in Febraury, it might be worth paying to mail them.

You can also look into stick sunscreen, such as that made by Nutregena. I carry it around with me all year round for those times I am cought unprepared. Not a liquid, so it doesn't go in the 3-1-1 bag.

Also switch to stick anti-perspirant instead of roll-on.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

You do realize that you advised her to break the law...right?

really? Perhaps you should not jump to conclusions quite so fast.

Razors are allowed as long as they are the general kind you buy at your local CVS! straight razors would probably be prohibited, but do you really know anyone who still uses those to shave?

However, we are promoting skin cancer on here :) The amount you should apply is 1 oz. If your trail tube lasts you a week, you will increase your risks of joining me as a skin cancer victim!

Just wanted to point out that while aubriee's list is great - it probably requires much more of an investment than the $50 the OP is trying to avoid paying the airline :)

Thanks everyone for these great tips. I guess I should have clarified that we plan to do laundry. It won't be too inconvenient since we are staying at AKV.

The sunscreen wipes are a great idea that I hadn't thought of and we will wear our tennis shoes and pack our flip flops.
