On valet parking some people tip both when they drop off the car and when it's brought back to them. Personally I think that's overdoing it and I tip only when the car is brought to me when I use valet parking at a restaurant or hotel - in most places they pool valet parking tips and then split the pool evenly. I'll generally tip at least a couple of dollars but no more than $5 for valet parking (usually at the lower end at restaurants and toward the higher end at a hotel that I'm staying at).
I don't tip pool attendants unless they do something special for me - pull some deck chairs together for my group, provide us with extra towels, etc. - and in those special cases I'd go $3-$5.
Don't forget the bellman - a couple of dollars per bag that they take to your room; maid service - I'd go $5 a day unless you're really messy then I'd go a bit higher and also usually leave a larger tip on the last day; room service - the hotel will usually include a tip on the room service bill but it's not a bad move to add a few dollars (particularly if the hotel adds 15% to your bill I'd give the room service person a few dollars to increase the tip to 20%).
