A CHANGE IN TIP POLICY

Katherine Calos,

Tipping on cruise ships can be confusing for occasional travelers, especially when it's officially optional but unofficially expected by the staff.

That's why Holland America is shifting its policy as of May 1. On cruises beginning that day or later, the ship will automatically add $10 per day in tips to each passenger's account unless the passenger instructs otherwise.

"We've given in," said Cees Tesselaar, hotel manager on the Maasdam. "Over the years, it remains confusing" even to experienced travelers and travel agents, because there are no guidelines on how much passengers should tip.

The new tips still will be voluntary. Passengers can remove the amount from their accounts if they prefer. They also can increase the amount if they like. Tips for individual crew members who have given extraordinary service also remain permissible.

In the ship's bars, a tip of 15 percent will be automatically added to the price of drinks./
