Tipping Mousekeeping in a DVC unit

I have two questions regarding tipping Mouskeeping in a DVC unit:

1. I have read that it is customary to tip $1/day per person in the room. So...if cleaning is done one time during the stay for a family of five, should that family leave $5 on cleaning day or is it more appropriate to leave $5/each day between arrival and cleaning day?

2. Is it customary to leave the same tip for a towel service day and a cleaning day?

Thanks!

I too have used the $1 per person per day as a guideline when staying at regular hotels. However, a DVC villa is not really a regular hotel room as they often have multiple rooms. I would think it would be appropriate to tip less on T&T day versus a full cleaning day. So on that day, I'll probably stick to the $1 pp per day. But on the full cleaning day and on departure, I think that with a studio, we'll still tip the $1 pp&d and if in a 1BR double it and if in a 2BR triple it.

Many here on the Disboards do not think you need to tip mousekeeping at all so you'll be getting lots of opinions on this question.

IMHO tipping shouldn't be considered as a automatic increase in someones paycheck. We tip due to exceptional service, not because someone does the job that they are being paid to do.

If that were the case, then why only tip certain people. What about the boat pilots, bus drivers and the CM's wearing a Mickey head in the hot sun?

Bottom line is tip based upon your beliefs and feelings, not because it may be considered customary.

Well said. Lately I wouldn't even consider our villas sparkling or fully stocked. When we stayed at SSR a few weeks ago our villa didn't have any paper products, glasses or mugs, plastic silverware, dish detergent, sponge, or sheets for the pull out. We had checked in late and called at 10:30pm to request these items (especially the sheets so my little guy could go to sleep) and again at midnight,. A cm finally showed close to 1am. We had no towel or trash service and didn't stay long enough for a full cleaning.

The only recourse is to share your experience with the Member Satisfaction Team. dvcmembersatisfactionteam@disneyvacationclub.com

We can only hope that the information gets forwarded to someone who can do something about it. I have noticed that all of the Satisfaction Team Members that I have spoken to over the years, are gone. :confused3

We stay in a one bedroom, three times a year, for a week. We always leave a $10.00 tip on departure day.

Unfortunately, we have had that same experience at that resort - in fact, 3 times last year :( I would definitely call and ask to speak with someone. We have spoken with the General Manager and her staff on several occasions while we were on property. Our usual problem is not having a pack-n-play (even in a 2bdrm) and it taking HOURS to get one. That was a big plus when we bought at BLT and GC. Good luck! Maybe if we continue to say something, things will change and someone else won't have the same frustrating experience.

Well said. Sometimes I wish they would have tips included like they do in some countries, but then again, some real good hard workers tend to lose out then.

Exactly. My tip to housekeepers consists of doing extensive prep when I check out to make their work a bit easier. I strip the beds, tie up and take down the garbage, fill and run the dishwasher, throw out old soaps, make sure there is nothing left in the fridge or cupboards that wasn't there when we arrived, and put all remotes and coasters back where they belong. All towels are consolidated in the tub of the master bath, and I make sure all lights are turned off. I figure that's almost better than a monetary tip, since they will be able to do their job faster and better. FYI, Disney does NOT consider housekeeping a tipped position.

The other problem with housekeeping is who gets the tip? Is it the person who cleaned the villa for you before you arrived, or the one who is cleaning it after you leave?

Diane, your quote got me wondering....what positions at Disney are considered tipping positions?

I have seen this mentioned multiple times on the Disboards, but when I google tipping at WDW every post mentions tipping mousekeeping. One comment was that that mousekeeping is paid $12 - $13 per hour so they are not in tipping position. This rate per hour is higher than many hotels pay their maids. Yes, they are paid more than minimum wage but still less than I'd want to raise a family on, so I still tip mousekeeping for cleaning my villa.

Mousekeepers start at $8.25/hour. Here is link:

Bell services start at $7.45 - $8.25/hr. Here is link:

There are frequent threads regarding tipping and the "Disney does not consider mousekeeping to be a tipped position" statement is often repeated. I don't recall anyone providing documentation for this statement, though it may well be true. I will continue to tip mousekeeping when my room is cleaned and stocked well. I will also continue to leave my room in the best possible condition for the sake of those who clean and to allow the next guest to check-in as soon as possible. But that is only my personal decision and I certainly respect the right of others to disagree.

Same with me. They're cleaning up after me, including toilets, I just simply feel better leaving a tip.

I usually leave a few dollars in an envelope marked mousekeeping on trash and towel day (just DH and myself in a studio), and we are almost always left extra towels and toiletries. :goodvibes I certainly don't expect it, but it's nice, and I figure that's their way of letting us know they appreciate the tip.

Per my close relation, Mousekeeping is not a tipped position. To further my interest, I sent an email to WDW Guest Relations and asked and was responded to with an email stating that Mousekeeping is a salaried position and not a tipped position; however I could tip at my discretion if I felt the service rendered warranted a gift. ;)

couldnt do it. Was paying my tab via credit card and there was no spot for a tip. I asked the server and he said they didnt take tips?
