I don't know if this is the right place to post this but since we will be going to DLR this is where I will start. Feel free to move it if need be.

I will be staying at the BWPPI with my friend and her family. We will be staying in one of the mini suites and there will be six of us total (I can already imagine the mess :) ). How much do you think will be acceptable for a daily tip to housekeeping. I don't want to seem cheap or rude to the people/person keeping our room clean.

totally stupid question, but how do you make it obvious that it's a tip? every time I leave money out it's still there when I get back :confused3 and I end up leaving the tip at the end of the trip.

I have asked the maid if she is going to be working for the duration of my stay..........or handed her a tip when I see her........but let me add I have had trips where I never do see the maid. This summer at the marriott residence inn at hotel circle san diego I had on the desk a tip envelope left by the maid....I always tip , but I really hate being asked for one, I feel they are a bounus for good service . But I did leave one :thumbsup2

If it's just my wife and I,we leave $2/3. The whole family,$5/7. That's per day, btw. ;) If need be,we also leave a 'polite' note for more towels and whatnot. :thumbsup2

We leave $5 a day, more on holidays (we go to Disneyland for Christmas) or if we've made a mess somehow. For Disney trips, I make little notecards to leave with the money so they know it's a tip and at other hotels I have the kids draw a little picture that says thanks or I leave a note. :)

I always write a note to put under the money that says "For Housekeeping, Thanks" so they know it for them. I usually leave it on the bed since I know they would have to see it there when they make it. If we need extra shampoo or soap, I write that on the note too.

i worked as a housekeeper in a hotel for five years when i was younger.
the most obvious place to leave a tip would be on the pillow. many guests put it there; or on the desk or bathroom counter with a note, as someone else mentioned, is fine too. japanese guests always left a daily tip on the pillow. :)

edited to add: the housekeepers are probably told to not take a tip unless it it very obvious that it is indeed a tip. so put it on the pillow or place the tip with a note, other wise they won't take it. this is to ensure that no housekeeper takes money from a room not intended for her/him.

We do a $1 a person/ per day, more if we leave a big mess and we tip daily rather than at the end of the trip.

I do the same thing if we stay more than two nights, and a bonus tip at the end of the trip. I have also left a tip on behalf of family members that we are travelling with per night, and left the end tip up to them (of course, I never have told them that I do that).

I'm pretty tidy when we travel, but if we leave a big mess I leave a bigger tip for the housekeeper's trouble.

I usually leave the tip in the bathroom in an obvious spot, & usually put the hospitality card on top so they know it's a tip. I don't think we've ever asked for anything extra.
