I'm having a brain fart. How much is it again per bag for the bellhop?? (or roundabouts how much?) I can't remember. Thanks!!

Lindsay (who is getting things finalized for her upcoming December trip!!)

Minimum $1 per bag, $2-3 for larger/heavier bags.

We generally give $1 a bag unless we have a lot of light souvenir bags. Then we kind of lump those together and pick an amount that seems about right. It also depends on how enthusiastic they are and how well they interact with us. But that is just to get over $1 a bag. We will also round up if we are close to another bill denomination.

You know now that you bring it up I have a question. We stayed at the CR in February. Now when we got out of our car a gentleman took our bags and then after we checked in the cm at the desk called over another bellman to take our bags up to the room. We had no idea what to do about tipping the first man. I don't think that they should expect you to double tip for your bags, but it seemed as if the first guy was waiting for a tip too. Does anyone know what I am talking about? :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

You need to tip them both.

I tip everyone that I allow to touch my bags. The guy that takes it out of the car gets $5. The guy that takes it to my room get $20. Even if it ends up being the same guy he gets tipped twice.

Thanks for the info - I feel like a real cheapo now!!! hee hee Can't wait to show my dh the threads so he sees that it isn't just me!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I do think it ridiculous this practice of tipping anyone who comes into contact with the bags. I do it, but it is over the top. Exactly how much are these bellhops paid by Disney, because with these tips I'm sure they'll make more than I do (and I'm a professional). Incidentally, my best friend worked as a car valet driver at a hotel and seemed to be earning way in excess of me on a daily basis due to tipping.
I also have to say, if I experience poor service or rudeness (which I have had from some in the past) when they complain about the weight of bags etc then I feel very strongly that the tip gets docked seriously. I have no intention of being taken as a mug who has to tip regardless of the service just because I'm from out of country. Also, I absolutely find it enraging when a bellhop asks you to give them a hand with a bag/case; The answer, 'no, it's your job for which you are paid' springs to mind. I will agree a tip size with my family (I'm the youngest but probably the one given the responsibility most times for handling this stuff). Maybe I sound kind of harsh, but I feel very strongly that the tip is not a guaranteed thing until the customer experiences GOOD service, not just service.

This happened to us at the Royal Pacific......... the same guy got our luggage out of the car, and since our room was ready, he was the same guy who escorted us up, so DH wasn't sure if we were suppose to tip him again......... we did of course, but sometimes it's hard to know. I'd say, tip anyone who touches your bag. You don't have to go overboard, we give the guy who gets the luggage out of the car $5.00....... period!! Then the guy who escorts us up, "regardless" if it's the same guy, $1.00 per bag, just like when we check out, the guy who brings the luggage down, $1.00 per bag....... he is usually the one who takes it out to the car, since we don't go to the desk to check-out, we just go down, DH goes and gets the car, and viol'a.......... but, we do tip each person regardless.

You have a choice. If you don't want to tip then don't use their services. It is so easy to say, "No thanks. I've got them." Personally I tip because I value their service.

In this country beel services is considered a tipped position, so often not paid full minimum wage. Thus they rely on tips for a living. If you don't want to tip you have the option of moving your bags yourself. But if you choose to use their services, you need to tip them, to do otherwise is rude.

Question...Why tip the unloader a flat $5 and then the guy who hauls them all the way to the room only $1 per bag? For us, the unloader would be getting a far better tip per time invested. Do you have a ton of luggage and that makes it a better deal?

I tip the guy getting the stuff out of the car a flat fee of $5 because there isn't that much work or time involved. I then pay the one taking it to my room a flat fee of $20. I only have 3 suitcases or so and $20 is pretty darn good!

Ok a little off shoot... What about using DME??? How do you tip, if your bags "magically" arrive in your room while you are out? :confused3 I've been wondering about this for a few days, and thought someone on this thread might have had experience!
Thanks!!

If the driver helps load and luggage you are carrying under the bus, tip $1 per bag. The drivers have been somewhat aggressive about asking for tips. Do not feel obligated to offer one if they don't do anything but drive you from point a to point b. You don't tip WDW bus drivers, why would you tip the DME drivers?

If your luggage is all being taken off the conveyor at the airport and you aren't touching it, you don't need to tip anyone. When you check out you need to tip whoever comes for your luggage. WDW has tips for bell services built in.

I generally tip the bellman who brings our bags to the room $1.00 per bag. If there is a person who just takes our bags out of the car and puts them on a cart (I usually assist with this as well) I tip less.

I don't think you read my post accurately. I DO tip, and I do value good service, but I if they are rude, or pass remarkable, then their tip gets docked. Period. I'm probably more generous in my tipping than a lot of people who post on the subject, but I'm no mug either.
I also tend to think that we are much more accepting in the UK of poorer service than Americans, and as such I don't see Americans tipping when they don't get good service. I have first hand experience of the way Americans handle things through my own relatives (before anyone flames me). But this is getting off topic, and I was merely pointing out that you should not feel obliged to tip if you do not perceive good service.

Could you guys please not hijack my thread? :) My question was answered so start a new thread if you must debate.

Moderators feel free to close.

Exactly why I said it was off topic. Just correcting a little misunderstanding.
