Tipping before or after cruise?

I noticed on our cruise docs that if we tip at the beginning of the trip, they will notify or waiters and hosts. Has anyone noticed that if you tip ahead if you get any special treatment, i.e. the special goodies in the room?

No, haven't heard. I prefer to tip based on service received, after it has been received.

definitely not....IMO there is no advantage to tipping before.....

one time on a different cruise line we traveled with a elderly lady who did require a lot of assistance because she used a wheel chair. We gave our cabin steward 50.oo on the first day and he treated her like royalty. That is what we had hoped for because she was worried she would be a pain in the neck. I think they would have helped her anyway but he did go out of his way.

our travel partners gave the cabin steward 25.00 phone card the first evening. They usually get a day off during the cruise and this way they could make his family calls. He was very appreciative.

I believe in tipping based on service. Good service they will get the recommended tip and extra. If service is lousy then the tip will reflect.

Same here, we tip based on the service provided. However I am still fuzzy on why we tip the head server. I think we only saw him twice during both our cruises.

Because he is running the whole show from behind the scenes most of the time....
Ours did stop by every night to make sure things were ok though.
