tipping at buffet resturants

How do the buffet style resturants work? Does a waiter/waitress take an order, bring drinks. etc.? Do people customarily tip 18% ?

At the Disney Restaurants they will take your drink orders, bring drinks, keep your drinks refilled, clear out use plates, bring additional flatware if needed and even discuss items on the buffet with you. And, yes, generally they will get the same tips as in full service restaurants.

However, if I am in a low-end buffet, such as CiCi's Pizza, where I get and refill my own drinks and nothing is done with my used dishes until I have left I have received no service and do not leave a tip.

I usually leave a smaller tip at buffets, although not always. If the service is exemplary, with dishes cleared promptly, drinks brought almost before I ask, and suggestions made as to how to approach the buffet and what the server might recommend, then I tip the same as a full-service. If the server is less than stellar, and dishes aren't cleared promptly, and there's little/no interaction between us, I usually tip between 10-15%.

On the DDP the tip is added, otherwise it's up to you to tip as you see fit.

The customary tip at buffets is 10% for good service - that is getting your drinks and clearing plates.

But you will find that there are a lot of big spenders on the DIS who like to tip what I would consider an excessive amount everywhere at WDW.
