we are getting a 6 hour charter out of Nassau. It includes fishing, snorkeling, cooking our catch and rum drinks on a private beach.

What do we tip the captain and the mate? I've read conflicting things about tipping just the mate and not the captain.

How do you go about giving them the tips? Seperatly in envelopes or all together to the captain?

Thx!

When we tip, we don't make it a secret - just hand them the tip. I'd tip whoever steered the boat to and from the location, and anyone else who "did" something for me. Often, there may be a tip box for everyone.

Thanks!!! Very helpful!

We hired a private charter in Grand Cayman for our family of four to take us to Stingray City, snorkeling and to Starfish Cove. It was one Captain, his boss's boat, and us. We just handed him a cash tip at the end and thanked him. It cost about $375 for four hours. We asked to be finished after three hours so we cut it short by an hour. I believe we tipped him $40. I am normally a 20percent tipper, but didn't in this case.

do you still tip if the owner of the company is the one that took you on your excursion? I am a bit unsure of this. If the idea of tipping restaurant servers, room hostesses, etc is for good service and because they are not paid a higher wage, then do you still tip say, the owner of the boat even though 100% of what you pay already goes to them anyway?

This is where I'm super confused... And how do I know if he's the owner. My husband says that we should tip 20% and split it between the two. I don't want to do that if the captain is the owner and the mate is only making tips. If we were to do that they would each get about $220usd, is that a good days wage (well for 6 hours + prep and post?!).

When we do private charters, we tip 15-20% and give it to the captain at the end in one envelope but tell them to please split it evenly amongst the crew. Not sure if this is standard, but it is what we do.

I am not sure a tip is warranted for anything except maybe cleaning the fish. Even then, I am not sure how much that would effect it. Can you even bring raw fish on the ship? Or, do they cook it for you there?

I think we have tips for everything. I want a tip for being required to tip. Which would simply reduce how much I tip to begin with.
