My brother is in Hawaii and is asking whether or not a floating week for a 2 bedroom lock off for Marriott Kaanapali with ocean view is a good buy at $40,000.

My gut instinct is no find a resale but apparently its new and he has had experience trying to trade Florida and North Carolina timeshares and failing to get Hawaii. So he thinks he has to own Hawaii to get it at will. I think that maybe fair enough but maybe another Mariott might work?

What do yall think? Those of you with non-Disney timeshare experience what would you buy instead? They live in Northern California maybe 2 or 3 hours from Tahoe. A California oceanfront timeshare wouldn't work because they already own a house oceanfront.

Disboards...pretty please don't move me...I need experienced timeshare help!

It is generally never a good idea to buy a timeshare anywhere from the developer, which is what it sounds like your brother is doing.

Go to TUG (Link) and take a look at all of the resales that are avialbale in Hawaii. He will spend much less than the amount he was quoted and still have his Hawaii week (and a Marriot too).

Good luck.

You can save some money resale but the question is would he use it essentially every year. If the answer is no, he shouldn't buy there. It is true Maui is hard to trade into but it is quite a chunk of change. There are other timeshare far cheaper that might be better. He should at least wait and check around before making a final commitment, the resort wills till be there.

He says their plan is to use the one part every year (I guess the bedroom) and trade the other elsewhere.

Dean can you tell me if there is any advantage to buying directly from Marriott? And is it worth 10,000?...or whatever the difference might be.

The only difference is the ability to trade for points and not it's not worth it. Will they really go every year? They could buy just a 1 Br if they wanted.

Who knows if they'll go. Right now my bro' is too excited about it. Doesn't really want to hear it might have been the wrong decision. I'm assuming they will be okay if they don't... I think they can afford the mistake if it is one but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out there were cheaper ways to do this.
