Tim Tebow

I think you nailed it with this statement. I think the dislike for Tebow is truly that simple. People are simply uncomfortable with seeing acts of religion. However, we do not want to sound intolerate so we try to avoid the truth with weak excuses. I can respect someone who is honest and says, "Seeing Tebow take a knee and pray after a game makes me want to throw up" because even though it sounds bad, it is a honest feeling, and we have all had those feelings towards someone at some point in our lives. Being honest allows us to examine ourselves and our own intolerances.

I like Tebow. I like his confidence. I like that he is not intimidated by the media. However, I am not a Tebowmaniac....I know that he is human and flawed. I have never thought he was more religious than another(who am I to judge that), nor did I ever think that he was the first Christian to play football. I agree...those type of statements are irritating and add to the drama.

I'm only uncomfortable with over-the-top acts of Religious display...as I previously stated other players Religious displays (White, Bavaro, Brees, Rodgers, Warner, etc.) have never bothered me to the extent that Tebow has/does. How would one feel if Player X who practiced Santeria sacrificed an animal on camera during the game, where would ones comfort level be then? I bet in the same place mine is ;)

The other major issue I have is how Tebowmaniacs have raised this guy up on a pedestal as if he is the first ever Religious, non-rapist, non-gun toting NFL player to strap on cleats. Clearly this position comes from people who don't pay attention to the NFL, it's kind of like those people who blindly attack Metal or anything else for that matter. Are there a % of undesirable characters in the NFL? Absolutely, but they are far from the majority.

Also the media treats this guy like he is something special, as I previously stated one night last week Tebow or Tebowmania was mentioned 146 times in a hour of television across all networks, Brady was mentioned 5 times during that same hour. That's a little ridiculous considering the fact that Brady is a Future Hall of Famer and arguably one of the top 5 QBs of all time....Lets face facts Tebow is an average at best Quarterback who can barely throw...Will he get better? Possibly, but he could also fade away into obscurity like so many other Run First-Pass Second QBs. People are forgetting the fact that NFL Defenses are going to adjust to Tebow and the Spread I Formation the second time around, much like what happened with the Wild Cat. Just look at what the Patriots did the second time around, the 31st ranked Defense in the league made Tebow look like a High School QB and absolutely man handled the Offensive Line. Why? Because it takes a totally different set of skilled O Lineman to run that style Offense on a regular basis. The Broncos don't have enough draft picks, trade pieces or Cap room to retool that entire Offensive Line.

So unless Tebow learns how to throw in the pocket on a consistent basis he will never make it long term in the NFL as a QB. I've said it all along I have never wavered from that point. Tebow is the new Michael Vick, sure he will win some games and make some exciting plays but he will never take his team to the football promised land.

BTW not taking anything away from his work ethic because no one can dispute that.

Funny you should mention this...when I first started hearing about Tebow's "over the top acts of religion" in the media, I told my dh that Tebow must have sacrificed a chicken on the field to gain so much attention. Like I stated before, football fans are such a diverse group of people and are tolerant of many things, but I guess religion is not one of them.

I agree that some Tebowmaniacs are over-dramatic. Football tends to bring out the maniac in many of us. Our die-hard loyality over-rules our ability to reason sometimes. :goodvibes

The strong feelings are fascinating to me. I just can't imagine despising anyone other than child molesters/rapists/spouse beaters/etc. It just seems crazy to me. I can understand getting sick of the media covering Tebow, but who cares if he wants to pray publicly. If he was out there beating his chest, holding communion, or speaking in tongues at full volume, I could understand that. I just don't see that what he is doing is so over the top. If he was a muslim and wanted to pray towards Mecca (forgive my ignorance if I got that wrong), I would have no problem with that either. That would not be over the top. Maybe if it wasn't my religion, I might be a little disdainful - I'm not sure. But I wouldn't despise that person. Again, I have to say the strong feelings are fascinating.

I find it fascinating as well, and I say that as a Tebow fan. Back in my college days I would have used this as a study for my PR research class.

In fairness, I think we tend to use stronger words on message boards to get a point across. Not saying some don't truly despise Tebow, as they have admitted, but messages boards tend to elicit strong responses and lots of exclamation points to make a point!!!! ;)

I've actually spent time thinking about why Tebow doesn't appeal to me. As a fellow homeschooler living in FL, you would think I would love the guy. Unfortunately, I think the homeschooling aspect is probably what turned me off from the get-go. Homeschooling has a reputation of being full of religious fanatics and Tebow doesn't help that reputation. Now that he is with the Broncos, homeschooling isn't mentioned very often. When he was a Gator though, I always heard references to it and his mom felt the need to bring it up in every interview. That was a huge turn off for me and it just snowballed from there.

I don't think Tebow's actions are over the top on the field. However, I do believe he enjoys the controversy he has started and I think it is just what he wanted. He wanted this to be about religion. He wanted people talking about this subject and he accomplished his goal.

Again, living in FL and associating with a number of homeschoolers has likely slanted my views. With each victory, Facebook and our homeschool message boards would light up with Bible passages and ridiculous statements that God was watching over Tim once again. It worries me that there are people out there that actually believe that God has nothing better to do than keep on eye on a quarterback for the Broncos.

So, that is where my dislike of Tebow comes from. I don't hate him or wish horrible things upon him but he doesn't appeal to me. I don't think he is a great quarterback but I do believe he has potential and drive to get there one day if he wants. I do think if he makes a "mistake" off the field, something that would go against his religion, he will be lambasted. If you create this public image for yourself, you better live up to it because it is a long, hard fall if you fail.

I was unable to watch the Bronco's game on Saturday...did he make sure to do his public "praise God" kneel on the field after they lost?

I'm pretty sure he did, because he used to do it in Florida win or lose, I don't see why he'd change that. However, it's not as interesting to the media when he does it after a loss, so it's not on TV.

I don't know much about football. I'm sick of hearing about how Tebow is better than everyone because he is religious. From what I've read, he seems like a good person who does much for his community. That's great. It's not because he is religious though. There are plenty of religious people who don't. There are plenty of people who are mean, selfish and evil.
There are also plenty of people associated with the NFL who do just as much. You don't hear about it though.

Its like because he thanks Jesus and prays on the sideline, everything he does is better than anything anyone else does. I don't think its his fault. Its fans and the media. I do think he's young and caught up in his own hype though.

I will.

During the lockout Tebow was off on book signing tours and doing commercials.

Brady Quinn hired a former Offensive QB coach to work with him during the off season.

Guess who came into preseason looking like a #1 draft pick?

Guess who came into preseason looking like a division 2 QB?

Guess who got the oppotunity to start when Orton couldn't cut it?

Every NFL player worked hard to get into the NFL.

Every NFL player that stays in the NFL has a great work ethic.

This off season will be a big test....

Does Tebow stay in Denver and have 100% participation in the off season conditioning program?

Or does he just come in for the mandatory mini-camps?

Or somewhere in between?

Nothing but the 1st is acceptable when you have been given the starting job in spite of being one of the worst passers in the NFL.

uh, actually Tebow WAS doing work during the lockouts:

http://denver.cbslocal.com/2011/07/15/tebow-proud-of-his-offseason-conditioning/
LAKE TAHOE, Colo. (CBS4) – Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has been making public appearances in and out of Colorado since the regular season ended last year.

While it might be easy to assume the young celebrity been more concerned with publicizing his autobiography or improving his golf game than preparing for next season, he wants to make it clear he’s been keeping in shape for football.

“People see me on this stuff (golf courses and at public events) but it’s 45 minutes or an hour a day. The rest of the time I’m with my teammates training, working, trying to get better,” Tebow told CBS4′s Vic Lombardi in an interview on Thursday from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe, Calif.

“I’m very proud of the work that I put in this offseason and I’m looking forward to getting this thing going and competing and I’m very excited about that.”

Watch Lombardi’s complete interview with Tebow below. It which included his thoughts on what might happen if he bumps into Broncos executive John Elway on the course.

uh, actually Tebow WAS doing work during the lockouts:

Sorry... I live in Denver and hear everytime Timmy sneezes.

He participated in 'some' of the brian dawkins organized workouts.

He worked out occasionally with the wide receivers down in florida.

He worked out occasionally with teammates here in Denver.

He worked out plenty but there was no 'above and beyond' what others on the team did.

I'm willing to grant that last year was a special case and wait to see what happens this off season.

But being a NFL QB is a full time job.

He needs to be here in denver working out with the team... not off in Florida working out... not off in the philippines... not off doing a book tour.

You would think that there are plenty of other worthy targets for all that hatred.

He is a white, wealthy Christian. In today's world hating people like that is not only permissable, it seems to be encouraged.

Perhaps it is a matter of perspective but Reggie White was loved by the media. He pushed his faith far more than Tebow (he was a minister who led prayers on the field!) and was never put under this type of scrutiny. This article is interesting. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=dw-white020306

From the 2006 article (long before Tebow):

Perhaps no professional athlete had evangelized more often or more publicly than Reggie White. During his playing days, he preached at every opportunity. He mentored young players. He spoke out against sin. He even had a habit, after mowing over some opposing offensive lineman, to go back, help him up and say, "Jesus loves you."

Reggie wasn't too pleased with gay people:

Reggie's most controversial statement came in 1998 while addressing the Wisconsin Legislature. He declared, "Homosexuality is a decision, it's not a race. People from all different ethnic backgrounds live in this lifestyle. But people from all different ethnic backgrounds also are liars and cheaters and malicious and backstabbing."

Make no mistake, Reggie was a great football player and Tebow is not. But that alone does not explain the unequal reactions these two have received. I am sure that White had many detractors, but I don't think people openly attacked him like they do Tebow. In my opinion, race is more likely the reason.

do you have any links to this? everything I have read or seen is different than this - also espn did several shows on him......and really this offseason was alot different.

Reggie White took a lot of heat for his statements about gays. He did not get a pass on that. He did not escape criticism for some of his religious activities and statements. But, when he kicked butt on the field people liked that.

It's disingenuous to portray rich white christians as victims.

Manning 3:16 says I just took your job.......I really hope the rumors aren't true and the Pats don't trade for him I think I will weep openly if my Pats trade for him....

As long as Tebow doesn't end up in Chicago I'll be happy, lol.

Lived in FL for the Tebow years, then Denver. I could use the break. :rotfl:

Manning is a done deal and they are trying to trade Tebow. It is a great deal for Denver. They had to make the switch from Tebow but the city was so Tebow crazy they would anger the fans. Now, with Manning, no one seems to care about Tim anymore.

Rumor in Denver is that Miami is interested in him. Jacksonville turned him down. Although since he is only making 1.5 mil (a mere pittance in the NFL), there is also speculation that since nobody really wants him, they will sit him behind Manning to learn. There was also some bizarre talk on one of the sports shows about Tebow switching positions.

Welcome to the Broncos, Manning. Glad I just renewed our season tickets.

Just read about this. Crazy! I just can't imagine Manning playing for anyone but the Colts. I wonder if he only considered horse name teams. ;)

I sure hope Tebow doesn't end up with the Pats. I will cry. Don't like him, don't want him.
