They were bought by BK last year and then BK moved their head office to Canada for tax reasons.

They were part of Wendy's back in the early 2000's as well. A friend of mine nearly took a job with their headquarters in Columbus, OH, but was worried about rumors of the impending IPO, which, IIRC, happened around 2008.

For those unfamiliar, Tim Horton was never a Superstar of that era, like Bobby Orr or Stan Mikita, but he was a steady, dependable, well-respected player who didn't take crap from anybody. He was playing for Buffalo but still maintained a home in the Toronto area when he was speeding home one night and was killed in an accident. I don't think alcohol was involved, but excessive speed was. IIRC, well over 100mph/160kph.

There are no Tim Horton's in this area. I think there are a few in northern NJ, and some "express" locations in Manhattan. Wegmans here sells TH canned ground coffee. I get my TH fix whenever I'm in Canada.

Tim Horton unfortunately turned out to be double the legal limit for blood alcohol, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt. Also unfortunate was the business decision made by his widow who sold her shares to his business partner a year later for $1 million.

No Tim Hortons in our area but when it's with the xBF, went to them in MN. They were just a coffee place - not bad but no Dunkin Donuts

I'd note that Winchell's isn't gone, but they have pulled way back from their peak. The articles I've read trace their downfall to the late 80s after they were bought by the company that owned Denny's at the time.

Here in California, the independent donut shop rules. There are still some open that I remember as a kid in the 70s. Many are owned by Cambodian immigrants and their families. I'm not a huge consumer of donuts, but every time I go into one I can tell that they have loyal customers who show up every day and sit at the same table or stool. The donuts themselves seem to taste the same - just a commercial mix. And they'll package them in pink boxes. We had a Winchell's in our hometown, but that didn't outlast the independents.

I will second this. We probably have 20 doughnut shops within 10-15 minutes of our house. Maybe it's more! Not one chain.

I visit Tim Horton's every time I arrive at NYC through Penn Station. Their coffee is pretty good, so I decided to try a donut on my last visit... never again will I make that mistake

Since we threw this term around on the original post... as much as I enjoy Tim Horton's, I'm a fan of NJ's ubiquitous Dunkin' Donuts! Especially when the cookie dough iced latte is in season! So good!

Former Buffalonian, now Rochestarian and I can attest that all throughout WNY it's called Timmy Hos. Birthday cake and strawberry timbits are my favorite.

There used to be a highway stop on the QEW that had Tim Hortons and a Wendy's. I called it Wendy Hos.

I think I live in the Timmys capital of Canada. There is a Tim Hortons every couple of blocks, in the hospitals, the college, the university and who knows where else. My husband has to have his medium double double every day. On Christmas Day he will drive halfway across the city to find a Timmys which is open. There are a number of places in Michigan that have them. They have a couple locations in Dubai too. When we travel the first thing he does when he gets home is buy a coffee. I never liked coffee so I never understood it. I know a few people in this thread claim that Timmy Hos is an acceptable nickname. I have to assure you that if it is common where you live it is extremely regional and may just be you and your group of friends. Universally Tim Hortons is known as Tims or Timmys. I've know a few people who tried to make nicknames work but

In the San Francisco Bay Area there are some chain locations like the once prevalent Wibchell's and a few Krispy Kreme. One KK actually closed down when business dropped.

One franchisee plans on opening up maybe 9 Dunkin Donuts in San Francisco (proper), although there's no word on where.

If I was in charge there would be Tim's, proper poutine and maybe a maple taffy stand. You know where you pour the boiling maple sap on snow and it turns semi-solid. It would be a challenge to keep the snow snow, but they do it for the misting fans.

The PP is referring to the enRoute stops along the highways. Last summer we drove to Ottawa and I think I stopped at all of them. They always have a Tims and then they have either a Wendy's or KFC or BK just depending on which one it is. I think I saw more Wendy's than anything else.

Yep. The only time I've seen a Tims paired with a Cold Stone Creamery are at the service centers on the highways. I've never seen them together in towns or cities. Not saying they don't exist somewhere, just not commonly.

Awww, that's a shame. I always thought he WASN'T drunk when he was killed. I looked into it and noticed that the autopsy wasn't released until 2005, long after he died.

About a week before his accident, I was impressed that he was able to get the better of Flyer Broad Street Bully Dave Schultz in a fight.

For a while, there were Cold Stone/Tims combos in cities (I know both Toronto and Ottawa each had at least two, and I believe that they had more). But, they are no longer (the Timses* are still there, just with no Cold Stone).

Another trivia point - in the Wayne's World movies, "Stan Makita's Donuts" is a shout out to Tim Hortons.

We had some of the Tim's/Cold Stone Creameries in Nova Scotia, but they took them out last year. Timmy Ho's is not a nickname you here around here. Tim's or Timmy's are the usual names used.

I live just outside of Buffalo and they are everywhere. I don't like their coffee. I prefer Starbucks or Spot Coffee (local place). I used to like their bagels but the last time i went in there they no longer carried a sesame bagel but they had all sorts of strange flavors. So I've moved on.

I do wish they weren't everywhere.

Lol when people call tim Hortons "timmys" I can't help but think of that south park character. I can't take people calling it that seriously now lol. I just call it tim Hortons...

Their ice capps are amazing. Everything else is pretty bland. The donuts are horrendous.

I live in Buffalo but am from Rochester and can confirm that nearly everyone in both cities lovingly refer to Tim Horton's as "Timmy Ho's". Call me crazy, but I actually prefer Dunkin! Love the peppers in their egg whites and their iced coffee drinks are better IMO. But TH is certainly the dominating presence here.
