I remember seeing "Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas" when I was thirteen. Coming out of the theater, I remember loving this film from the get-go. The music. The story. The beautiful (and unique to me) animation. Every year I watch "Nightmare" at least twice - usually around Halloween and Christmas.

Unfortunately, "Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride" is no "Nightmare." Granted, "Corpse" isn't bad, but it's no Nightmare. The problem with the film is that it is so similar in tone and style to Nightmare that it inevitably begs for comparison between the two -- and the comparison plays highly in Nightmare's favor.

As the film begins, Poor Victoria Everglot (voiced by Emily Watson) is being forced to marry Victor Van Dort (Johnny Depp) because her family, broke and miserable, is in need of the Van Dort family's money. Upon first glance, the two fall in love, although they are admittedly nervous about getting married. That trepidation causes Victor to run off into the woods when he forgets his vows at a wedding rehearsal. It is in those woods where he accidentally places a ring on the finger of the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter) and is transported to the world of the dead. Will Victor fall for the Corpse Bride or will he long to be with Victoria?

And that's it. The entire story. Short. Simple. And only 75 minutes long. Unfortunately, that 75 minutes doesn't feel like it goes by so quickly. Like I said before, the comparisons to Nightmare are inevitable because of the similarities in style and tone. And because of those similarities, the film looks great. Nightmare looked great and in twelve years, there have certainly been improvements in the way this "claymation"-style animation is created. That being said, it almost looks too perfect. "Nightmare" has that unpolished look to it, and this looks too good (all right -- that's kinda silly, I know, but it's what I was thinking when I was watching it).

The music - also not nearly as good as Nightmare. I always thought Nightmare would make a wonderful Broadway-style musical, but in this one, the four songs fall flat. The flick would've been better without them, I thought.

The story just lacks something, too. Nothing really happens in the story. The mystery of the Corpse Bride is so easily solved from the get-go that it seems unnecessary. The underworld in The Corpse Bride can't hold a candle to Halloweentown in Nightmare and the residents of the former can't compare to the latter.

That being said, the voice acting is wonderful (I'm a sucker for a British accent). Depp is quite good, but Watson and Bonham Carter really shine. The two female leads are perfectly cast - creating much emotion through their voices. Danny Elfman is also quite good as Bonejangles.

Perhaps it's unfair to compare Nightmare and Corpse Bride, but when reviewing movies, one is inevitably going to compare, especially when they are of the genre. I know many will love this film, but it just didn't do a thing for me. Unfortunately, Corpse Bride is no Nightmare Before Christmas - it's not even close.

The RyMickey Rating: C-

Thanks for the review. I'm taking my girls (4th and 7th graders) to see it Sat. My older dd is really excited to see it...I think they'll enjoy it!

Just thought I'd give this a bump...anything I post after 3:00am inevitably ends up many pages back...

Nightmare got some really bad reviews as well, yet it was good enough to get Disney to transform the DL Haunted Mansion every year for the holidays.

I'm betting I'll like this one just as much. I imagine I just like Burton and Elfman more than the average movie fan. I even liked the new Planet of the Apes.

SSB saw the North American premier couple of weeks ago in Toronto... and have to say that I loved it! Have to also say, that had never seen NBC, believe it or not...

We are going to see Corpse Bride this weekend. We are big Nightmare before Christmas fans. We know all the songs in that whole movie, they were all so catchy. Plus we both like Danny Elfman. NBC is one of our favorites !!!
Of course we will compare and the new one probably won't be as good...but still looking forward to seeing it.

Say it ain't so, SSB. Get thee to the video store immediately and rent Nightmare Before Christmas! :rotfl:

Seriously, you'll love it.

Let me just qualify my review by saying that mine is the only review at this point that I've read that doesn't like the movie. I'm not trying to sway anyone to go and see it, but I just couldn't help but feeling that it paled in comparison with the inventive and imaginative NBC.

LA LA LA LA LA I'm not listening LA LA LA LA

We're looking forward to it anyway.

:p

I saw it at a sneak preview Wed night, and I enjoyed it. I have never seen Nightmare Before Christmas so I can't make any comparison. I didn't think it really needed the musical numbers, but I would recommend the movie.

Even though I gave it a C- , I would still recommend people to go see it.

I'm a big Roger Ebert/Richard Roeper fan and I'm reminded of Ebert giving a thumbs up to Sahara and a thumbs down to an art-house flick that Roeper liked. Roeper got on him saying, "You can't honestly think Sahara was better than [the art movie]" and Ebert said, "Sahara, for what it is, is good. It's a fun flick. Is [the art movie] better made, better written, and better acted? Yeah, probably, but it just left me feeling empty."

That's kind of how I feel about the Corpse Bride. Beautifully made (although the writing fell flat), but just left me feeling empty.

Still, go see it...I'm sure I'm gonna be alone in my opinion on this one...it wouldn't be the first time.

Now I have to go buy NBC. I've been meaning to, and after reading this I need to see it again.

Corpse Bride will have to wait for video for me, I think.

DD11 has been bugging me to go see it so I guess we will. Never was interested in Nighmare, but I think since we are Johnny Depp fan's that is why she wants to see it.

im going tonight with my roomates. ill have to see how i like it. ive been waiting forever to see it.

We went to see The Corpse Bride this afternoon. It is beautiful to look at but really lacking in the story department. My husband and kids seemed a little bored. Its worth watching on DVD but it is nowhere in the same league as ANBC as far as music and plot go.

We saw it today and enjoyed it. We couldn't help but compare it to NBC but it was still an entertaining movie. We thought it needed more catchy songs like NBC. It was worth seeing. :smooth:

Saw it this afternoon....it was o.k., mostly 'cause I kept picturing Johhny Depp as Victor..not the claymation. The story is interesting enough, but so VERY predictable....and some things were just , well, hokey. BUT....we did enjoy it, it is short, so I recommend a matinee if possible....much cheaper. Also, not much of a reaction in the theater by the other folks who saw it, not much chatter afterwards. A few parallell characters to NBC...
Victor/Jack
Scrappers/Zero
Victoria, Emily/ Sally
Mst of DD's friends who saw it used the term "boring".....I think the secondary characters (dead folks) were kind of bland..there is so much that could've been done with them...just seemed like an afterthought compared to the main characters. However, def worht renting if you chose not to see it at theaters.

My dd (16) really wanted to see it - she likes Tim Burton & Elfman's music. I took her this afternoon, and we both enjoyed it, but then, we're an easy audience.

Saw it tonight and loved it! It was kinda weird and creepy and that pretty much does it for me anyway. As far as originality goes, at least it wasn't a remake of a thirty year old movie or TV show.
