My dgd's have asked to do the luau at 35 days out  and there is only 3 tier availability left. Looking for comparison to the Hoop Dee Doo as to seating arrangement. Is this balcony seating like the HDDR? Is the seating area about the same size? How is the visibility for tier 3?

I am just trying to decide if this is worth 2 dining credits with only tier 3 available. Thanks for any insight on this!

I havent done either HDDR or SOA ( I just booked SOA for Sept and all thats left is 3) but from the chart Ive seen and I have seen the Lua area there isnt a balcony..

The whole seating area isn't that big. The only problem is that you may have an obstructed view like pole. We have been in tier three and had no trouble at all. Even the far seats are only 50 to 60 feet away from the stage. You'll have fun.:thumbsup2

Also...about the 2 dining credit thing...you may want to look on YouTube and see if the show is what you are expecting.

I haven't been to HDDR, but we did do SOA on our last trip. There really is no balcony seating to speak of, but there are some tables in the back that are a few steps higher than those in the front. We were in Tier 2 in the back center, and we could see everything fine. As previous posters mentioned, the seating area is not that huge- I wouldn't worry about being too far away to see anything. There are obstructed views though in a few areas.

Here's the official Disney page which includes a seating chart:

Thanks, I have read a lot about the show and the food...lots of opinions... but the dgd's are spoiled and we have DXDP with a couple of extra credits to use.

To everyone else thanks for the seating information. I was mainly concerned about being too far back to see. I had pulled up a different seating chart that showed balcony seating and was confused. I went ahead and booked tier 3, so the dgds will be happy :)

I have a question on how seating is assigned? Is it when you pick up your tickets or when you check in at the podium?

ASMU/POR Dec 16-22, 2012 & CR Sept 8-15, 2013

From what I have read it is assigned in the order you reserve it. I do know this is true for the HDDR.

when we went to the Luau in May...we did do a tier one...but I looked around and tier two and three had plenty of visability as well as each area had their own servers...I dont think I would pay for tier one again out of pocket...I would look at two or three...we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere and we all had a great time.
I thought seating was assigned when you bought your tickets...

I ended up canceling my Tier 3 and paying OOP for Tier One, only b/c I know my DH if there happens to be a pole or something blocking the view, he wont be happy.. I havent done the Luau since 1989 and he hasnt done it at all, its a surprise for DH so I think the money will be worth it with the alcohol and better viewing. I dont know that Id pay OOP again but we will see...

It depends on where you get seated. I have read Tier 1 people pay, then complain about getting stuck behind a pole. The seating area is not that large. We were told that seats are assigned as you pick up your tickets, which you can do from your resort concierge desk up to 7 days in advance with your ADR number. One time, someone at the concierge desk wanted me to wait, but knowing this information, I told her to give them to me. We always book the luau towards the end of our trip, so we can pick up our tickets from the earliest day out to get the best seating for your assigned tier. Doing this, we have always gotten seated towards the very front. Tier 3 is on the far sides and in the back which is a step or two up from the main floor. I actually wanted to be seated back there. Once on a low crowd nite, my sister and her son sat up there and enjoyed it - my nephew was on steroids for asthma and was a bit moody - therefore scared of the fire dancers and loud music. As your trip gets closer, some people will probably start to drop out, but I would probably do Tier 3 dining plan over paying OOP for Tier 1.
