Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Thanks kat3668 and Kickapoo Joie Juice for the Mickey Heads. I appreciate it!! DH brought home a bag of un-used rubberbands, DD is so excited. So is everyone using thier washing machine to rinse out their shirts? I'm just tring to to get all my instructions in order....I'm one of those ones that needs to read and read and reread then read again then read while doing, HAHAHA! And you know it seemed last night Dh almost seemed a bit excited about the shirts....wondering if I should wait to do them when he is home?

Three things I'll do next time:

1. 100% cotton shirts,

2. Prewash and preshrink in hot water, won't dry them.

2. Soak in soda ash (I did this time as well), but let shirts get much dryer after the soaking-I think that some parts of the shirt didn't absorb or "suck up" the dye as well because they were sorta soggy.

Just wanted to let you know that my shirts were rather wet when I dyed them. I did that bunch of blue & fushia ones that i posted before. I washed them, tied them when wet (well, barely damp -- I have a front loader that spins stuff really dry), then soaked them all in soda ash and dyed them over about an hour's time. I squeezed out each one but they were still pretty wet. I used a ton of dye and it soaked in really well.

For the person who asked about the soda ash, my directions said to either dye them when still wet with soda ash (right after soaking) or to soak them, line/air dry and then tie, saving the trouble of having to soak them right before dyeing, or if you want a group to tie their shirts themselves.

I rinsed mine about 7-8 at a time, rinsing in the sink individually but then machine washing them all together.

Does this work if you use shirts that are not 100% cotton? THe shirts at Michaels that people posted about, being $2 are all 50 cotton 50 polyester. Will that worK?

This is our shirts and they are the 50/50 Hanes from AC Moore. We(I) only soaked them overnight because we had somewhere to go for the day and we(I) couldn't wait to see how they turned out!

OK....getting ready to do this I have my mickey heads done, just waiting for all the kids to wake up before I soak in soda ash, then I'll bind and mix the dye. Once we wrap and let sit over night, do I rinse while the shirts are still bound up? I think I read that some where. Ohhhh, I'm so nervous, LOL

Okay, here are mine. This project was majorly messy and I worried about getting other colors on the yellow but I think they came out fine. The tie dye is quite forgiving. We used 100% cotton tees, no soda ash. We used the tulip dyes and I think they came out vibrant. I let them sit overnight and then untied, rinsed numerous times, then rinsed about 3 times in washing machine. Hubby's had some white areas so I might redo it but I'm not sure.

I had started rinsing the girls tees and had to run out somewhere quickly. When I came back I noticed that some of the colors had bleed (especially in the middle tee) creating a blurry effect. Next time I will be sure I have plenty of time to rinse thouroughly.

I think they look great! I love the colors. I wouldn't do anything to DH's, it looks fine, IMO!

I have mine all wrapped up waiting to go....but I know mine DH and DD are a bit "muddy" looking on the backside. Trying to decide to let them sit over night or rinse at the 6 hour mark. DD "helped" and they got over wet. I'm hoping once we rinse and everthing they won't be too brown looking OH well. Both DS's shirts look OK....for now. We will see how they do over night. DS 9, looks to be the best. He seemed to take his time. Unlike the rest of us!! LOLOL

Just unwrapped the first one. Looks like I had the bands too tight. Lots of white. And Mickey has a slightly smaller right ear, LOL Hope DS isn't too disappointed. It was a fun and fairly cheap project so we can run off to Michaels and Target again, LOL. I'll see how the other come out, if we only need to re-do a couple then we can do those then just grab some of the kids under shirts to use up extra dye and play with patterns. (I might even grab one of DH's shirts to make a fun shirt for me). It was a messy, out door project but it was fun!

Here's my two cents. I also did the same and wondered just how they would turn out if I used the soda ash after tying. I used the Jacquard kit and just followed directions. I wasn't sure what would happen and yes, they were absolutely sloppy to make! I had dye dripping all over the place and was worried that I didnt' get the dye in the folds enough.

In the long run, I liked the way my shirts turned out (I posted them a few weeks back). For the "official" batch I'll do them the same way, but then let the tied shirts drain a bit more on some towels before dying.

Now the big decision is whether to do have the mickey head just on the front, or in the front AND back. Hummm.... I guess that I can ponder this while I run out and get the kids' school supplies since they start school on Monday and everyone has their school supplies on sale. (They're in year round school - we love it, especially since it gives us two weeks of vacation in October for trips to Disney! )

My instructions also said you can soak in soda ash, line dry the shirts, then tie them later.

For mine, after soaking the tied shirts in soda ash, I did squeeze out as much liquid as possible without messing up the spiral. I put the "disk" on paper towels, put dye on the top, flipped it over on clean paper towels and dyed the bottom. They weren't too drippy.

I did my shirts back on the 4th of July. My son hasn't seen it yet (this trip is a complete surprise).
The top 2 are my second ones. The bottom was my first attempt. The picture I copied from someone had the ears too close together so it looked more like a heart than Mickey. So I redid the picture to spread out the ears more.
I used the Jacquard groovy tie dye kit from AC Moore.
I also used the paper towels to absorb, so it wasn't messy at all (I read it in the book on tie dyeing at AC Moore. Didn't buy the book, just read the tips before paying for the kit). I also found out how to overlap the colors, so I only had to have the 3 color kit.
This is my first time trying to put a picture in a post, so hopefully it works.

You need to use this [] type of bracket, not this{}. I find it easiest to upload photos to photobucket and then copy and paste the IMG code. Have you checked out this thread on posting photos? It is very helpful.

I am getting ready to do some more shirts. I posted in the other tie dye thread last year my first attempt at Mickey shirts, spiral tie dyed. I don't think I did the spiral dyeing correctly for a real spiral but nonetheless it worked. It was the Mickey head that I messed up on and I am back reading this thread for advice on how to prevent the Mickey head from doing what it did last time. I am open to any and all suggestions!

Hey, we just got back on thursday and we wore our shirts!

We were in the Animal Kingdom I think on Monday? And I saw another family with "The Shirts"! They had the Mickeys done on the back, as well, the dad had one in blue on his back.

One funny thing, we wore ours the next day, and it felt so *weird* for us all to match! We've never, ever, done matchy matchy in 20 years, and I haven't ever tried to match my kids, and we kept staring at each other. My husband said that he felt like part of a multi-person puppet-he was like, am I the horse's a** or the head?

Seriously, it made for some great pictures that day!

I need to get going on my tees, BUT I can't decide on whether to do the mickey head on just the front, or do the front and back.

I know that it's not a life-or-death situation here, but my brain has been having problems making decision lately. DH doesn't care what I do. SOOOOoooo,

I'm leaning towards just the front, but then people behind us could then see the mickey head if we had it on the back.

Could you let me know what you would do so I can make up my mind?
