If tickets are purchased in advance and, due to ill health not used, would you be able to get a refund?

What kind of tickets? Airline tickets - it depends on the airline. Park tickets - you can save them for next time. Tickets for a specific event - I think you are stuck.

A little more information on your situation will get you a better answer.

Disney Park Tickets are usually not refundable. However, the "clock" for expiration does not start until the first time they are run through a Park turnstile. So just keep them in a safe place (and remember where you keep them) and use them for your next trip.

Most "event" tickets are non-refundable, airline tickets are usually subject to a change fee and are non-refundable (assuming purchasing non-refundable tickets), other tickets, vary.

They're hardcore on the non-refundable event tickets. My grandparents and aunt & uncle planned a trip and bought MVMCP tickets. My uncle died like a month before the trip, so needless to say it was cancelled. Disney would not refund the MVMCP tickets even though he had DIED.
