Ticket upgrading question for first timer

We've been to Disney 3 times and next year will be trying out Universal for the first time. Can anyone tell me - I am getting tickets from the Canadian Air Miles program - they are 2 day park to park tickets. I don't want park to park, but would rather trade them in at the gate for 1 park 3 days or 1 park 4 days. Has anyone ever traded in types of tickets at the gate or know if it's possible?
I called them, but the CSR was fairly useless.

You'll just have to pay for any price difference and I wouldn't expect any money back. Make sure you go to Guest Services before you enter the park.
