Ticket upgrade question

We currently have 2 day tickets bought directly through Disneyland. We are going to be in LA for a little over 2 months so we are considering upgrading to the Enchant magic key. I've already looked at blockout dates/reservation availability and we could still get our $$ worth. If we do decide to upgrade, can I do so on day 2 or can it only be done on day 1? I don't want to lose our reservation for day 2 if I upgrade on day 1. I thought I read something about having to upgrade that first day but maybe I'm misremembering?

You would want to reserve on day 2 but at that time you can't guarantee there will be park pass availability for AP holders at that time.

So I can upgrade the ticket to a magic key on day 2? For Disneyland reservations is it not like WDW where if you keep refreshing especially close to the date you can generally score a reservation? There’s still a lot of Jan availability right now but that can obviously change.

Not that I've found - I kept checking for both nov & dec and didnt find anything. Of course things change all the time.

Sorry you haven’t found any. I’m sure that’s a big disappointment after getting the pass.

To answer your core question, yes, you can (and probably should wait to) upgrade on day 2. Just do it before end of day. You would have to rebook your reservation if you upgrade on day 1. So if you can tell at that time that there is plenty of MK reservation availability it might be safe to do so but given how MK reservations have been going that doesn't seem likely.

All you "lose" by upgrading day 2 instead of day 1 is MK discounts for those days which is annoying but probably not worth jeopardizing your park reservations for.

It is possible to grab cancellations and they have been periodically opening up additional MK reservations (even in Nov/Dec) but they go fast and you have to be "on it" either via a notification service or frequent checking to catch them.

Keep in mind some of the Magic Key levels have sold out. Seems less likely that would happen for the Enchant Key, but could be possible before your trip. I'm currently debating getting Enchant and whether to do before trip or upgrade during our late January visit.

I’ve thought about that too and wondered if they’ll sell out especially if people buy them for Christmas presents. I decided if that happens it just wasn’t meant to be and I’ll be fine. I tried to justify the ~$700 we’d lose but can’t.
