Ticket Upgrade Question -So Confused

I've confused myself into a corner on this one. I know I can upgrade my park hoppers to an AP and I know we have a DVC Discount for the "Gold Pass" - which is what I want.
I also know that the cost of the ticket would be applied to the pass - Here's my confusion:

I have a 6 day park hopper for me, DH and son.
If we wait until the last day - as many have said they have done - is the total cost of the tickets still applied toward the purchase of an AP? Meaning - we would already have used 5 days worth, so do they take off the cost of those five days, thereby only applying a one day park hopper price toward the AP?

Do I do this the first day?

I know exactly how much i spent (through disney) on the tickets and I know exactly how much the passes would be - is the total purchase price of all of our tickets going to be taken off the total purchase price of our AP's no matter when we upgrade?

I can't think this out on my own guys - thank you in advance for this.

They give you credit for the entire price of the pass, not just the remaining day.

If you upgrade the first day, you can get the photo pass pictures on your AP, presumably starting that day...not sure if you wait til last day to upgrade if you'll have pix from first day

Is the AP backdated to renew one year from the first day of use of the hopper? If so, there is not any advantage to waiting to upgrade.

I have no idea - does that mean Is the AP going to be expired starting the day you upgrade? If so - i think yes?

The AP is always backdated to first day of use of the hopper, if previously used. What the OP might be referring to is when upgrading to Gold it is often suggested to wait until your last day of use (before using the entitlement generally) because you could be traveling over blackout dates thus this allows you to go over blackout days then upgrade to gold. Thus getting use of the blackout days which wouldn't have been allowed if you do so at the beginning of the trip.

So the OP should consider the date of the upgrade if they are traveling over the blackout dates for the Gold pass. Also to the OP you will always be funded the total cost you paid for the ticket as long as you upgrade before expiration and the expiration date is always assigned 1 year and 1 day from the first date of use of the hopper (if used before upgrading) or the first use of the ap (if hopper wasn't used before upgrading).

This is SO helpful!

Thank you!!

Blackout dates currently showing on the website for the Gold pass are Dec 19, 2019, to Jan 2, 2020 and Apr 4, 2020, to Apr 17, 2020. I would expect similar blackout dates for Christmas and New Years 2020-2021. Unless you'll be traveling during those time frames, you can upgrade your hopper at anytime.

I was told that you cannot purchase the gold pass IF you have used your tickets for black out days. You would have to purchase the pass that allows you no black out days. I would be careful.

That’s what I would have thought too and posted as such on this thread.

I was told I was incorrect and could be done. I know if you have a Park Hopper Plus and use a water park day you can’t upgrade to anything by the Platinum Plus (since it includes water parks) but some report it wasn’t true for using a ticket during blackout dates. This matters to the OP only if they are going during blackout dates and should consider the risks if any.

Mousesavers is still reporting the same thing

“Working Around Annual Pass Blockout Dates

Some of the Annual Passes available to Florida residents and DVC members have blockout dates when they can’t be used. If you want to buy one of those annual passes, but your next visit is going to be during one of the blockout periods, you can buy a regular ticket, use it for the dates you can’t use the annual pass, and then upgrade the ticket to an annual pass on the last day. (if your last day is a blockout day, remember to do the upgrade after enjoying the park!) Be sure to read our tips about upgrading tickets before starting this process.”

On the Tickets sticky at the top of the Theme Parks board are multiple reports of using a regular ticket during blackout dates and then upgrading to Gold pass (DVC or Florida resident) on the last day. So it is allowed and is frequently done.

My daughter did this one easter break. The gold pass was blocked out, so she bought a 6 day ticket and used it during the black out days. On the last day while in the park she upgraded to the dvc gold AP. Worked perfectly, plus she got all her photos too. Yes, the expiration date was 1 year from the first day using the multi day ticket.

This is exactly what i'm going to do - I'll be there December 7-14 so no blackout dates but i dont want to lose pictures. Thanks!

You can upgrade before using the ticket too. I'd go ahead and do it whenever you have a little extra time to do so during your trip.
