I have a similar issue. I have an activated AP but hastily bought too many packages prior to the sales of the 1-day tickets. I called Universal recently to see if some of the packages can be used towards an AP-renewal or brand new AP. Unfortunately, they were unable to help over the phone and I was referred to see guests service in person.
I fly down next week for the Preview and plan to speak to someone (only if the line is not too long). I will update my findings.
