Ticket Question

I am going to Universal with my son in April and my husband has the ability to purchase our tickets (1 day park to park) at a discount. I was planning on purchasing the tickets prior to our trip and add the express feature- would I be able to add the express to the discounted tickets? If so, can I do this online prior to the trip?
