Ticket question about child turning 3 while at Disney

I'm trying to sort of get a feel for what a trip to Disney will cost us next year. We'd like to go for my son's 3rd birthday. From looking at ticket info, it looks like under 3 are free? When going through a vacation package on the Disney website, it asks for the child's age TIME OF TRAVEL. Does this mean that if we stay onsite, and we arrive when he is 2, that when he turns 3 we still don't need to have tickets for him? Or will we need to purchase a ticket for him on his birthday and the days after?

Thanks!!

I believe they go by the age at check-in. So, if he's 2 at check-in, he's free for the entire trip.

(If I'm wrong, someone will come along and correct me.)

That's correct - if he is 2 at check-in, he will be free for the remainder of the trip. We are taking my ds for his 3rd birthday as well. When I called to book the trip, the first rep that I talk to said that I will have to pay for his tickets/meal as soon as he turns 3. I did not book, and called back and talk to another rep who confirmed that the other rep was wrong. As long as he is 2 at check-in he is free the rest of the trip.

Yes, Yes, grab the free ticket while you can because REALLY, No one ever ages at Disney, it's Magical like that and they will even tell you so as you celebrate your little guys birthday! Man, my youngest (DD2) will be 3 in May and I so want to get back before then and it's looking doubtful . so sad. . .

FREE! Yay! (LUCKY!)

My dd turned 3 and is gonna cost the big bucks now. But then again she's 40 inches and can/will ride all the rides she's able to.

I miss the free days though!
