Ticket clarification

I just want to clarify the rules on annual passes.

We are arriving on May 14th, which is a blackout date for the deluxe AP. If I purchase day tickets I can get in to the parks on that day and upgrade my tickets to APs while I'm there? Can I still get my DVC discount? And the price of the tickets will be applied towards my AP? What kind of ticket should I buy? A one day ticket or a 4 day park hopper?

Thanks for helping out a WDW veteran's first trip to DL.

You do not need to buy a day ticket or a parkhopper. You can go ahead and purchase the Deluxe AP. A DAP can be purchased and used on a block-out day, after that first day, all other block-out days will apply.

If you upgrade a discounted ticket you will loose the value of the discount.

You have two choices. Since only one day is a black out day, you can buy the $50 black out day ticket. Or you can upgrade your pass at the ticket booth to a premium instead. If you do the first you can apply that cost to upgrading later in the day.

For just one day is it worth it to get a premium pass? Will you coverthe extra cost by gaining the free parking or extra % off?

If I pre-purchase the AP online to get the discount on the picnic lunches can I still get on the blackout day by redeeming the voucher when we get there?

From the MouseSavers website:

If you buy a restricted Annual Pass (such as the Southern California Annual Passport, which has many "blackout dates"), but you plan to start your trip on one of the blackout dates, the blackout will not apply on the day you purchase the pass. So if you go to Disneyland on a Saturday and buy an Annual Pass that is normally not valid on Saturdays, you will still be able to use it that day at both parks.

I'm not certain on this one. Hopefully others will chime in.

That won't work. The only way to get the AP discount or to log in to the AP section of the Disney website is to have an activated AP. When you buy the AP online, you are only buying a voucher that needs to be redeemed at the park. The AP becomes active the day you first use it at the parks and remains valid through the same date the next year. Once your AP is valid, you are allowed to take advantage of the benefits it provides, i.e. park admission, discounts, and parking (if included).
