I grew up on a farm, and to us, storms were nothing but trouble. The lightning is dangerous, the torrential rain would drown the crop, the wind did all sorts of damage.
My mother always taught us kids to put on our shoes during a thunderstorm. This was because she was taught that same thing and it was so they could run to the root celler if needed. Well, we had a basement, and didn't have to run outside, but we still had it ingrained into us to put on our shoes.
To this day I still put on my shoes during a thunderstorm.
