Digital cameras don't have to be complicated. I find that Kodak makes some of the easiest to use cameras (I just gave my 9 yr old brother one).
You wll end up saving money, because you won't be wasting film on be shots. With digital, you can see the picture right away and decide whether or not you like it. If you don't, delete and snap again. I find that I hardly print pictures out now, but instead look at them via computer (although, if you do decide to have pictures developed, you can often find great deals).
Depending on what camera you get, you will have several different types of memory cards Two of my camers use SD and I have found 2G cards for about $25 without a rebate.
