Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Essay on pigs and rabbits

8 years old and attended a church that had its own concept of scouting...to earn a writing merit badge I wrote my first work of non scholastic merit.... I may still have it on 60s elementary writing paper... you know. ..2 feet long..foot wide... it's in storage

Left hand margins for essay writing

When the 4th grade teacher introduced "ESSAY" writing on non college ruled paper and how to make margins.... WOW...3 page paper on California History and Sir Francis Drake was going to be easy .... rewrite... my fingers were very wide

High school 1974 literary magazine as Senior editor

I didn't save my debate briefs...my oratory speeches or expository works.... just a copy of the literary magazine that actually surfaced on eBay....I had the most poems because there was anynmous writer opportunity... work selected by a panel ....8 years till I was published again

My daughter started writing stories when she was 5 and so I have collected her writings from then and through undergrad and grad school. I should copy and paste some of her FB posts and save those too, but I didn’t think of it til just now! (She’s a really good writer) :)

I started a journal when I was 13. Most of my writings are embarrassing, but I’m still glad I saved them.

All the saved correspondence I have collected over the years.

Tigger: I share your fear of horses. They are so big and my one experience of being gently dropped in a field (although it did knock the wind out of me) didn’t help with that fear. They have a mind of their own! I’d rather drive a car where I am the brain. :)

I'm behind...

Written things:
Old recipe cards hand-written by my mom, grandmother, aunts, great-grandmother, etc. For my 25th birthday, my youngest sister (who was 15 at the time) made me a recipe box with family favorites. Some of the cards are duplicates of ones my mom had so they are written by older relatives and some my sister wrote herself. It warms my heart every time I read one of these recipe cards.

I'm the oldest of four siblings, and I have the letter of love that my father wrote to my mother on the evening that I was born.

I have all kinds of things that DD wrote when she was little, including a packing box from when we were moving from PI to PA where she wrote a whole note about her math skills (in cursive, at the age of almost 6).

I have a small manila envelope that I use for "bills to be paid." I keep it because the original envelope held something that my mom sent to me when we lived in PA, 20+ years ago. It's the last thing that I have with her handwriting on it. I don't know why I keep it, but I do, and keep sticking it back together with clear packing tape when the folds wear thru.

Apple things...
>Real, cold pressed apple cider (especially if there's a little good bourbon to put in it!).
>Halloween decorations made from dried apple heads. They are little witchy things and the apple heads make them all wizened and wrinkly.
>Hot, homemade apple pie, as well as my mom's apple crisp. The apple crisp recipe is so good that my brother used to ask for it instead of cake for his birthday!

Movies:
Being There
The Turning Point (with Shirley MacLaine & Anne Bancroft)
Harry Potter series (although we MUCH prefer the books)

Happy Tuesday

#1 - APPLE STRUDEL - I ❤️❤️❤️ It!

#2 - CARMEL APPLES WITH FUN TOPPINGS - They are a good Fall treat. One day I need to buy one at WDW. I always look at them, but never buy them. I actually never see anyone buy them - I often wonder how many they sell :scratchin

#3 - APPLE PIE (WARM) WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM ON THE SIDE - I haven’t had this since last Fall years. It stinks that everything I love I don’t eat because I gain weight if I just look at it :lmao:So when I do have it, it’s a real treat.

Tigger: I share your fear of horses. They are so big and my one experience of being gently dropped in a field (although it did knock the wind out of me) didn’t help with that fear. They have a mind of their own! I’d rather drive a car where I am the brain. :)

Their size definitely intimidates me. I believe my fear was locked in when I saw one of my aunt's friends get bitten. My dad's side of the family grew up in an area that was fairly rural at the time and his much younger sister and neighbor friend would sometimes take me to see the animals on the various neighbors' properties. They often brought the horses apples and carrots, but this time, one of the horses got a bit overexcited for his treat. The horse wasn't being aggressive, but seeing her get bitten and the aftermath was enough for me. I actually tried a family horseback riding outing in 2019. I survived but I wouldn't do it again.

1. Apple Bourbon Cake - Years ago, my parents subscribed to Bon Appetit magazine and I saw this Apple Bourbon Cake on the cover that became my top birthday cake wish. I think it was a spin on a spice cake but everything from the cake and the frosting to the apples themselves were well soaked with Jim Beam. It was an amazing cake. Utterly delicious! A funny side effect...I taste apples whenever I consume Jim Beam...even when drinking it straight.

2. Candied/Caramel/Decorative Apples - Candied and caramel apples were some of my favorite fall treats as a kid. Sometimes we'd make them at home and sometimes I'd get one if we went to this one orchard to go apple picking. Disney sort of upped the bar on them with all of the adorable character apples.

3. Apple and Pork Chops - Apple is great for all kinds of desserts but I'm always amazed at how well it pairs with pork for savory dishes. I have a loin tucked away in the deep freeze that may need to come out for some kind of apple paired dish this weekend if we get rained out at softball.

.... with no Internet you probably had no idea about Rita Hayworth
Absolutely not back then and not at that age, although I didn't read Shawshank until I was much older (and had already seen the film 😂)

Not the biggest fan of apples but I'd definitely second warm apple pie and apple cider - that's a go to summer drink for me.

So I'm going for movies:

1. The Lion King - the first film I remember watching at the cinema as a child. There may have been others, but this is the one that always stands out.

2. Inception - have you ever watched a film that completely blows you away? Quite a few films have done this for me, but Inception is again the one that stands out the most. Films like this are especially good when you can still appreciate how much they impress you after multiple watches.

3. Shaun of the Dead - there are certain films you can rewatch over and over again and that you could probably quote verbatim. A lot of films fall into this category for me (Hocus Pocus, Cool Runnings, Hot Fuzz, Dog Soldiers and I could go on), but Shaun is probably the stand out.
