Thank you for all of the wonderful replies. It really does help when you're faced with things like this. Yesterday was a really busy day, but I'm a planner by nature and I went into plan mode when I couldn't sleep. With disasters, it's hard to know if you're making the right decisions, so I can only hope that my research and plans were the right calls. At least the limb is cleared, my husband's truck is at the autobody shop, a plan for my vehicle has been discussed with both the shop and insurance, we have info on rental car coverage should we need it (or the process if the truck is totaled), we have an appointment with our adjuster, we have a contractor recommended by a trusted friend that's working up a quote, I've started seeing if FEMA is an option for some of this, and we have air conditioning. So, that leads me to...
Air conditioning- It's about 90 degrees outside right now with a heat index of 96. I really feel for all of those people around us who are still without power and sitting in the heat, especially the ones who may be waiting weeks for restoration. I know what it's like and it's AWFUL. We were without power for about 3 weeks after Hurricane Ike in 2008. I was 8 months pregnant with DD15 and it was no less than 95 degrees each and every single day. Our daycare was destroyed by the storm, so I had no place to send DD17 either. Work wasn't too happy, but I wasn't the only one. Gas was scarce, due to stations being without power...so we couldn't even sit in the running car like we did the other night. I loved having to go to my Med Center area doctor because it meant A/C and access to an area that MIGHT have operable gas pumps with fuel.
ARLO- I have a bunch of these little security cameras. They gave me peace of mind in the early days of allowing the girls to stay home alone. They give me peace of mind about the house any time we go out of town. Even yesterday, when the girls started texting me that we MIGHT have power because a few of their friends got it back, I was able to access the camera app to determine if power had been restored (we had a late lunch after a busy day of getting all of the balls rolling to fix things). In another weather disaster, those cameras were set off by some torrential rain and ultimately alerted me to the fact that our part of town was flooding (this area has so many weather issues). Oh...it even was helpful letting me know any time our escape artist puppy found her way out of her crate.
Automobiles- While I think we're all pretty thankful for them, you don't realize just how grateful you are for working ones when something bad happens. In fact, I'm also grateful when those autos do their job protecting in the very worst situations. I have horrible luck with vehicles, so I'm incredibly grateful when I've got an automobile that's fully functioning. My last vehicle was so bad, VW bought it back from me. As much as I hated being in loaners (same thing with rentals when I've been in collisions), it's a huge relief to have a working auto get things done. I was also in a bad accident about 11 years ago where I learned to be thankful for autos designed to keep their occupants safe in crashes. I was at a full stop, rear ended by someone estimated to be going over 75MPH, and the interior of my SUV looked perfect. Not even a bit of glass broken or cracked. It got me thinking about DH's truck and how it handled that massive limb. It's UGLY on the outside, but the interior of the cab doesn't look too bad.
Edit- I should also thank
AAA! I've needed three tows within the last month and two batteries within the last year.
