Three Things...Gratitude Thread

(Wed, 8/16) - 3 things you're grateful for about your house/apartment/etc.
You keep posting topics where I just mentioned something a few days ago that fits. ;)
1. Our yard... Not just the yard itself, but the memories associations with it... Our yard was always the neighborhood hang out for my older brothers and their friends because it was big enough for pretty much any "kid" activity. And sledding in the winter. And being able to hear the sounds of the high school marching band, the crack of the bats from the baseball fields, and the occasional football game announcers, depending on atmospheric conditions.
2. I believe I've mentioned this, but my dad designed the house, so just the design/layout is special
3. That my mom, oldest brother and I still live together

(Thur, 8/17) - 3 things you're grateful for about your state
Another Missourian here! :) I agree with all of @WDWEPCOT's things, with a few very small corrections... Since we're talking about the whole state, we DO have a football team, since the Chiefs are on the Missouri side. And the Gateway Arch is now a National Park, not "just" a national monument. Even though I as a St. Louisan agree that it's much more monument than park. I mean, I love it, don't get me wrong, but it's no Grand Canyon or Yosemite! LOL
Now, to come up with my own answers, different from the ones above.
1. We have a WONDERFUL state park system. I'd rather have had one of those upgraded to a National Park instead of the arch, but oh well. (Okay. So that's similar to the first one mentioned above. So much for coming up with different things.)
2. Since we're in the middle of the country, it' not super far to travel to any other state
3. I'm grateful we have some wonderful hospitals in the area. Just had a routine cardiac appointment, and was told to come back in three years. I'll take it. :)

(Fri, 8/18) - 3 regional foods you're grateful for
Sorry, everyone.... you're getting answers from THREE St. Louians here, so my answers will not be unique. HA!
1. Gooey Butter Cake
2. Ted Drews Frozen Custard
3. Toasted Ravioli

TED DREWS ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
DELICIOUS!!!!!

MO has 7 National Parks by the way - nothing fancy here really to compete with Grand Canyon
Agree we can get anywhere pretty fast since we are in the middle
I think it depends what you mean by national parks. Missouri has some national historic sites and possibly some national forest lands, but the Gateway Arch is the only actual national park in Missouri.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_the_United_States

I think we’re both right in the general sense. We’re just looking at different definitions of “national park.” 😊

I don't have a cell phone and therefore don't have a camera, so I don't have a bunch of pictures that I've taken. However, things I am grateful for related to photos/photography:

1. My friend Diane. She is an avid amateur photographer, owns fairly professional equipment, and loves to take pictures. I met her as her daughter and mine were dancers (and both went on to pro careers in dance, although neither has a "big name"). Diane took pics of her daughter on stage endlessly, and therefore of mine, too. I have a whole bunch of candid, as well as posed, pics of DD through her dance years thanks to Diane.

2. BIG box of family photos that we unearthed when my mom died 18 years ago. We did an initial purge to weed out pics in which we knew nobody (not a mistake- I am now the oldest person on that side of the family) and I am doing a second sort to put names on the backs of the pics. Most of these were taken with my grandfather's polaroid, the kind where the film was actually encased in a foil packet containing the developing chemicals. YOu'd snap the picture and pull the film out of the camera from between two rollers, which spread the chemicals on the film. You had to wait for X minutes, then carefully peel apart the sides of the packet and wait for the picture to dry- hoping all the while that it was a good picture, wasn't over/under developed, etc.

3. (Stick with me here) Regarding photos, I am grateful for my bariatric surgery. I have always been very overweight and have never been photogenic. I mean, my mother didn't buy my high school pictures! Through the years, I avoided the camera at ALL costs because I hate the way I look in photos, but this means there are very, very few pictures of me on family vacations, at Disney (and we've been to disney 34 times, I think... I've actually lost count), etc. Almost 7 years ago I had bariatric surgery and lost 110 pounds. Still not photogenic, but I'm willing to be in pictures. DD pointed out that she has very few pictures of me, or us together, through the years because of my refusal to be photographed. She actually cried when we had a picture of the two of us taken together in front of the castle, about 5 years ago, pointing out that it's one of the very few "happy pictures" she has of us together. I am ashamed of my attitude towards being photographed because it kind of "robbed" DD of memories from her childhood. Lesson learned, and while I still don't love the way I look in pictures, I pose and participate for them, because it's NOT always just about me.

Happy Saturday!
We‘re moving our DD19 into her dorm today.
Baby slo @piglet1805 is starting her Sophmore Year

I could go on and on about this topic.

#1 - I’m grateful for digital pictures on our phones - I love scrolling through my photos whenever I want.

#2 - I’m grateful for Sears photography studios (that’s really dating me - LOL) - I have so…..many pictures of my girls that were taken there. I started taking them at 3 months and faithfully went every 3 months the first years, every birthday, every Christmas, their first 5 Halloweens and more. They can never say I don’t have enough pictures of their childhood.

#3 - I’m grateful for all the photo slides my mom has - it’s fun to bring out the projector and reminisce about times during my childhood and times before I was born.

1. Wedding Photos: We got married at Disney outside the Polynesian and our photos are really unique.
2. Senior Pictures: I think my girls’ senior pictures are fantastic. They both had a few done in studio and then picked another place for some outside shots. Oldest picked a local park and middle DD wanted the city. Both were great. Youngest Dd will do hers next year. I guess I don’t know if this is common everywhere? We did senior pics back when I was a kid though.
3. Scrapbooks: this was a social activity for me for a long time and I have many great scrapbooks of my kids. They like looking through them.

I don’t agree with this but this is what it states - I agree with you
Yes, that's what I meant about the "different definitions." "National Park Service" includes National Monuments, National Historic Sites, National Forests, National Riverways, Nataional Historic Trails, National Battlefields, and finally, what most people mean, the actual National Parks.

I think they felt sorry for us so they just vaned a bunch of stuff National ……… and put some Park Rangers there
Yep. Basically. In fact, on one of their own pages, the National Parks Service says 7, but lists 14, including trails. They aren't even consistent on their own page. I mean... they are a government operation, after all! (I work for state government. I'm allowed to say that. ;) )

So the full list includes things like the Oregon Trail, the Ozarks National Scenic Riverway, the Pony Express, The... entire city of Ste. Genevieve??, etc. It's a bit... much. LOL

So yes, one official National Park, and lots of other national "stuff" where they stick some rangers. With all the being said, I STILL say that the Arch was better left a National Monument and if they really wanted an official National Park, one of our state parks, should have been upgraded/designated.

(Sat, 8/19) - 3 things you're grateful for relating to photography/photos
1. The last family picture we have with my Dad
2. All the pictures my brother and sister-in-law took as they went on their three cross country hikes (The Pacific Crest Trail, The Appalachian Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail) so we could live vicariously through them
3. My Disney pictures. Only one trip so far. Maybe that will change one day, but I'm thankful for those pictures from my one Disney trip.

I’ve been to St Genevieve - it’s ok nothing to write home about 🤣🤣🤣 I mean seriously they’re really stretching here I’m telling you this because I feel sorry for us
National monument I cannot wrap my head around that it’s a national park it’s not a national park are used to work across the street from it I wouldn’t walk in that park now if you paid me for obvious reasons that I’m not even going to get into

I’m sure everybody sick of hearing us diss our state - it’s just they are silly so will stop
We do have some nice things to visit they’re just not national parks
Our zoo is awesome / we have several museums that are very nice / and lots of other neat things to do

(Sat, 8/19) - 3 things you're grateful for relating to photography/photos

1. I love the pictures of my family as they were growing up

2. I love the pictures my kids used to share on their social media. They really don't put anything out there anymore, but when my girls were in college they posted pics a lot and I loved seeing what they were up to!
3. I love seeing pictures from the past - when my mom was younger, when I was a kid, etc. It's fun to see them too!

2Now that we are Pearl on DCL…We get free downloads of and pictures taken on DCL

3My DDiL gave me this book, and it’s my very best gift ever. It outlines our trips together beginning when our Grands were 1,2,3.

I had to ponder this one today
You see I don’t have any of my pictures from when I was younger they mysteriously disappeared- I believe my sibling has them and she’s just lying about it so I have zero pictures from when I was a child
It’s a long story I’m not getting into it
I cherish my Disney pictures they’re wonderful memories of all the great trips I’ve had with my kids
I cherish my pictures of my pets that I’ve had all these years
I am fortunate that I have a very old album of photos from my grandmother from when she was a child and I cherish that
