Three Quick VWL Questions

We will be staying at VWL for the first time in October. We're really looking forward to staying there. Here are my three questions:

1. Is there an overhead fan in the rooms (we have a studio)? I have an ongoing sinus condition and need moving air at night.

2. Is the hairdryer in the bathrooms the wall type that isn't very powerful or a handheld dryer? We were at Kidani Village a few weeks ago and I was surprised and pleased to see a regular" Conair dryer in the drawer in the vanity. I didn't need to use the dryer that I brought from home.

3. How can we avoid getting the infamous studio with the dumpster view? Should I be direct and request "Please no dumpster view" or would it be better to request that we not get certain rooms or perhaps a particular view.

All answers and suggestions are appreciated!

1. There is a ceiling fan in the studios.

2. The hair dryer is the type that's attached to the wall.

3. In order to avoid dumpster view, you would not want rooms ending in 52, 54, 56, 58, or even 60 and 62. Not sure how far away from the dumpster you want....."52" rooms will be further than "62" if you get my drift. Honestly, we've had a dumpster view (studio 1558) and it was fine. We just laughed about it! We weren't in the room that much, anyway! Here's a link to a VWL room map if you need a visual:

I'm sure someone out there will correct me if my info is wrong.....

We had 1501 a dedicated studio on the first floor a few weeks ago. We loved that location. There was a door right ourside our room that led to a shortcut to the covered walkway to the main building. It was perfect for us and close to the laundry too.

You might also want to know that studio room #4533 does not have a balcony.

Keep in mind the "infamous" dumpster view looks an awful lot like all the other views. You'll see a bunch of trees. But if you look down, and over to the side a bit, you can see a well-landsacped dumpter. It's not the end-of the world you might think.

Anyway, you probably could request "no dumperter view" and they staff will know what you mean. But if you want to keep things more positive, request "close to elevators" and/or "lake-side". The dumpter rooms are the farthest from the elevator on the non-lake side.

We had the Dumpster View once. We were in the last Dedicated 2BR on the 3rd floor at the end of the hallway and our niece had the studio beyond that that looked right out onto the Dumpster area. It wasn't the prettiest view ever, but it wasn't too bad. We still hit the parks a lot and don't spend that much time on the balcony, so it's no big deal to us. I do sort of hate when we bring guests with us if someone gets those rooms. I figure they might think it's not a great location, but if I'm paying for the room - why should they care.

MaryJ - thanks for the room number for the balconyless studio. We have two 2BR & four studios booked in June 2010 and I don't want the one without the balcony. I posted a time or two inquiring about this room - but until now - you're the first person that seemed to know about it.

Here are some photos from VWL - the last one shows the bath vanity with the wall hair dryer. Also note our view - it was really nice in the morning with the mist rising off Bay Lake. Our studio was 4543 - not so close to the elevator that we had a lot of noise, but not too far down the hall, either. We were very happy with the location.

Oh I had the housekeeping/dumpster view in 2007. All the way at the end of the hall, 4th floor. It is not quiet and I can't say I liked seeing all our "clean" towels wrapped in plastic wrap in carts outside all night! If your a DVC owner, you can email the reservations department and make that request or if you bought points, have the owner make that request. It was pretty quiet at night, not so quiet early in the AM and a shameful view, especially when you know the beautiful forest is so close!

We stayed in VWL in a studio and requested "not xx60 or xx62". so of course we ended up with xx61. Not too bad at all, but DH figured 1/8 mile from the elevator ;)

Never stay at Kidani Village or BWV. You are sure to get the half mile walk from your room to the lobby.

Thank you, everyone for all of your helpful posts. I'm sure that it won't be that terrible if we do get a dumpster view. We're really not complainers and try to make the best of everything. I really appreciate the positive suggestions of requesting a lakeside view close to the elevators and the information about the studio that doesn't have a balcony. We are really looking forward to our first trip to VWL!

Do any 2 bedroom lock-offs have the dumpster view? It appears from the room layout map that everything on that side are either dedicated studios or dedicated two bedrooms. I have a lock-off reserved for July.

We have always lucked out with a unit on the lake side of the building.
