After searching the stores (walmart, target, toys r us...)I came home disgusted with the choices of board games for my family (9,11,13,15). I went on Amazon and started poking around.

After reading many, many reviews, I ended up buying three games.

1.Dominion
2.Castle Panic
3. Anomia

My boys love the first two and also enjoy the 3rd. My girls love Anomia. I love all three.

1. Dominion is a card game that uses strategy, a little complicated at first but you can quickly catch on. DD9 caught on after a bit. Each game is very different due to the selection of 10 out of 25 different Kingdom cards for each game. Certain cards interact with other cards so each game there are multiple combinations. They also sell expansion sets to expand the game.

2.Castle Panic is a cooperative game. Players are working together to defeat the monsters. If you have a sore loser in the family, this is a great game. My boys say that this game reminds them of a board game version of the video game Call of Duty Nazi zombies.

3. Anomia is a lot like the game Snorta (if you know that game). Each card has a symbol and a category (excercise, type of dog...) When your card has a symbol that matches the symbol of another player's card, you must both try to name a word in each other's category. Whoever successfully names a word in their opponents category wins that card. Lots of laughs and at times, you feel completely brain dead because when put on the spot, you can't come up with one stinking word to fit into what should be a fairly easy category.

I highly recommend going on Amazon if you are in need of fresh, challenging games for your family.

We were gifted with Apples to Apples this year, and can't wait to play it.
Also gifted with Betrayal at House on the Hill. We had played it last year with my brother and the kids loved it. Kind of scary, but DD is 11 and enjoys it.
My brother is really into games so enjoys introducing his niece and nephew to his hobby.

Those sound like good games! Does Castle Panic take a long time to play?

We got the Disney version of Apples to Apples for Christmas--fun!

Have you played Settlers of Catan or Ticket to Ride? I bought those from Amazon and we enjoy them. The 1910 Expansion Set for Ticket to Ride was on sale for $9.99 and I ordered it to set aside for next Christmas already!

Killer Bunnies, Thurn and Taxis, and Pandemic are games I've been eyeing for a while but did not buy yet.

We love Apples to Apples, we have the regular and the junior. I personally like the junior better because the regular often has words I don't even know what they mean and I'm no dummy! I'll have to check out Betrayal on the Hill.

Castle Panic takes about 20-30 minutes to play. Some gaming geek friends of ours said Settlers is a good game and I was eyeing it on Amazon, along with the Pandemic game, and Killer Bunnies.

So many other good games out there to have to always settle for Milton Bradley!

I have two recommendations, and I look forward to investigating yours! We have twin girls who are nearly 9. We played these at the beach with my parents, Brother (45) and SIL and brother (28- their game great for them with friends too)...

What's Yours Like - $17 they have two sides to the cards one reads "cell phone" which most adults have and the other is for all ages "bedroom"

One person doesn't know the word and asks everyone "What's yours like?" to figure it out. The word was laugh and my daughter said, "People say mine is hilarious"

Phase 10 (card game $6 for more people - dice game $6 for less)

I highly recommend the game Rolit for up to 4 players. This game is really a lot of fun. We had ages 8 through 80 playing, The best part is it is fairly fast, Not one that lasts for hours. IT took a little while to get the hang of it, but it is a lot of fun. Strategy, but fun and simple:thumbsup2

My SIL got Dicecapades - we LOVE it!! we've played with my 10 & 8 yr old sons, altering it as needed (for the "trivia" questions, we just pick the question they're most likely to know). with the boys playing, it takes a LOT longer than if it was just us adults.

I played the game Fact or Crap for the first time last night. It's a card game and the judge pulls a card that have statements that are either a fact or not. And the players have 2 cards and have to put down if they think its a fact or not. It's pretty fun and you learn some interesting things.

Dixit is a great family game that encourages creative thinking. It's also a beautiful game with lots of interesting artwork.

We got Apples to Apples for christmas too. We love it. My 6 yr old who's a beginning reader can read most of the cards and can play right along on her own.

We also got a lego game called Pyramid. it's very confusing at first but once we read the instructions about 12 times (lol) we figured it out. fun but slightly advanced for the 6 yr old.

Thanks for sharing about the new games. We've had a hard time finding some good ones that will hold all our attention.

always looking for new games

still trying to get the hang of pandemic.

may I suggest:
run for your life candyman :rotfl2:( a demented candyland game where your gingerbread man loses body parts. lots of fun if you use real gingerbread cookies for game pieces)

also:
troll bridge
bunny bunny moose moose

:3dglasses

We purchased for our DD7

Apples to Apples-FUN

Ravensburger's Enchanted Forrest-FUN

Monopoly JR-really cute and fun...you buy up amusement park rides, shows, etc and instead of houses, you put ticket booths on the properties, lol.

Head of the Class, we have not played yet, Sleeping Queens we have not played yet, Order Up we have not played yet, Rat A Tat, Cat, not yet.

She also received Rock Band which she has been playing a lot and we have been playing Guilty Party on the Wii. Really fun for I would say under 10yo and Dh and I had fun playing it. Up to four can play and you are each a detective, you can work cooperatively or competitively and there is a story mode and party mode. You go around different areas such as a mansion, opera house, cruise ship and question suspects and check out clues, before you can do that though, you have to do minitasks. Older kids might find it too simple.

We love board games!

This year I picked up Qwirkle from amazon.com. We've really enjoyed it.

I just subbed the thread.

I love board games as long as they aren't overly complicated. In fact, for a while, I was on ebay buy ing games from the 70's and 80's - games you can't buy in stores anymore.

I have an unopened copy of Ticket to Ride.... it was given to me by a friend who knows the creator of TTR. It is autographed. I have played the online version of it, often.

We got Scribblish for Christmas, and it is very fun! Easy to learn/ play, too!

I'd love to play more games with my mother, but its just two of us 99.9% of the time, so its hard to find games that we can play that aren't too ridiculous (ever play monopoly with just two players?). Any suggestions?

My niece received Funglish for Christmas & it was tons of fun to play.

I purchased Trivial Pursuit Team as a family gift for Christmas. I enjoyed it much more than the regular Trivial Pursuit. The game went much quicker than normal Trivial Pursuit. It's a bit different set up than the original Trivial Pursuit, but we all enjoyed it much more.
