Thoughts on Security searches?

Just looking for opinions on the security search when entering the parks. I'm all for security - but this seems like a half-hearted search that amounts to a waste of time. They barely glance into your bag. I'm certainly not advocating airline level searches with metal detectors and pat-downs, but I just think what they are doing now is a complete waste. Does anyone else think this should be eliminated or am I just impatient or perhaps crazy? :)

I think it's ok. I think it sends a message. They are only checking things carried into the park. I don't mind the 30 seconds it takes.

I agree. They are a waste of my time and a waste of securities time. My dh has walked into the parks with a bag on his waist covered by a jacket and they didn't even ask him to open his jacket. If you really wanted to bring in something illegal all you would have to do is put it in a pocket. That is about the only thing at Disney that I hate. We now just put everything we need in our pockets and walk on through the gate.

Doesn't bother me at all. As disney junky said...it sends a message. A few seconds out of my day doesn't bug me. :)

I agree it's necessary to have some sort of search. Half hearted or not, it's unfortunately needed after 9/11. It doesn't take that long and I'm always ready for it. Even at the Atlanta Falcons game, where they do pat you down (every single one of us), the security doesn't take that long. I feel better there is a check.

I posted a few months ago about my visit.

As I got to Epcot there were several Orange County police, lots of Disney security and some suits

THere were three "guests" sitting in the sun with thier bags very far from them and they had been stationed in a triangle very far apart from each other. Disney security and the police were watching them while other folks talked... Trust me those 'guests' dis not look like they were having fun!

So... don't be so sure that security isn't finding anything. I asked and was told that either they had found something or a "threat" statement had been made.

If you think the people checking bags at the front gate are the only forms of security, you've got another thing coming. There is security everywhere that you would never see or know about.

The security checks don't bother me at all since I usually wear cargo shorts and put the camera in one of the pockets instead of carrying the case. Security checks are part of the world we live in now. :sad2:

Exactly, there's definitely more to it than just a 30 second glance in people's
bags.

During our April 05 we thought the same about the security checks. In fact my Dh said, IF someone wanted to bring a small bomb into the park it is strapped to them, and NOT in a bag etc. So wouldnt be found.

Anyway, we had just gone through the check at MK on another day, and I was putting tickets away and getting DD3 into buggy. When suddenly a guy was tackled to the floor, and security were on radios, plus 2 "plain clothes" officers ( I guess) came running out of no where. I was shocked and as Im nosey, we kind of hung around a bit. He was taken away, and we didnt see any more. Later that night we spoke to security who wouldnt let on much. However on the monorail, we spoke to a CM there who said the young guy, was joking about having a bomb. The police were called and he was arrested.

Disney take any kind of "joke" VERY seriously! and who can blame them.

As others have said there are additional security at the gate that you will not notice, watching you having your bag searched. So yes I feel it's effective and not a waste of time.

I don't mind being searched at all but I want a thorough search.
I want metal detectors just like at the airport. I want to feel safe. I have nothing to hide and no one else that has anything to hide should not mind a slight inconvenience for their family's safety.

Search away, boys!

DS is a special needs child and we carry a tape recorder with us into the parks for him. Twice we have been asked to open it up and once they opened up the battery compartment. I have no idea what they were looking for but I feel safer even though it may be a false sense of security.

I wouldn't call it a false sense of security: The security that you perceive is actually THERE -- it just doesn't necessary stem from that security bag check.

An absolute waste it only inconveniences non threatening people. Believe me if someone planned on doing something you really think they will walk in with it out in the open in a bag? It's as bad as pulling out the mid-western grandmom for a wanding and search at airports.

This is the direction I tend to lean too.
I find it incredibly frustrating to wait in line while bags are checked especially if there is no way around the putsy stuff when I'm not even carrying a bag. It's probably on a par with having to wait in lines for rides with me. I hate it, detest it and avoid it at all costs.
The gates at Epcot seem to be the worst. MGM and the MK have the "no bags" entrance whereas I haven't found those entry areas at Epcot, to my great frustration. LOL

The only problem I have with security lines at Disney or any theme park is that, as someone mentioned, it would be very easy for someone to carry something in on their person. The look-through that they do on pocketbooks and backpacks are perfunctory, for the most part. Several people in this thread mentioned putting all their stuff in pockets, so they don't have to go thru the "search" line ~ unfortunately, many items that can be used to harm people -guns, knifes, even explosives- are small and portable. For example, I carry a set of darts in my pocketbook, which no one at Disney, Busch Gardens, Sea World, has even noticed; they're in a slim black case at the bottom of my pocketbook, with it's black lining.

So, I pretty much look at those lines as something of a waste of my time (and it's usually more than just a few seconds, depending on what time you go in), and as it's also been noted here, security certainly doesn't end at the entrance ~ and that type of security is probably far more effective. Strangely enough, if the search was more thorough, I probably wouldn't have an issue with it, because then it would seem to make more sense as it would be more likely that weapons or dangerous items would be found. I think before I gave a definitive yes or no, though, I'd like to see the parks' statistics ~ just how many items have been found at those security searches, that aren't false alarms or smart*sses like the idiot that was detained for joking about a bomb.

JMHO...

Security checks hav4e been 6the norm in the U.K. for30 years. When DD was a toddler they checked a dirty diaper! So I doubt a 30 second check is going to bother me. After 911 all Americans should be glad of any extra sefcurity and not complain about a wait. That wait could save lives!!!!

:disrocks: I am glad that they have security checks. In a retail store - do you ever complain about a cashier checking your credit card for a signature match? Don't - it's for your own safety.

Anything done to keep us safe is not a waste of even one second. The security people, I'm sure, collect vibes from people while searching their bags. These people are trained, so trust them.

Nobody is really LOOKING for items like darts, small pocket knives, and nail files at a theme park security check.

As we found on "9/11", an entire jetliner can be compromised with a sharp object...
but ON THE GROUND, that kind of thing, while dangerous to a couple of people within the actual reach of a determined perp, are not threatening in a GREATER degree "to the masses", like in a plane.
