Thoughts on Gay Days?

We went one year and hit Gay day in MK by accident. We met the nicest two dad family on the monorail. We bumped into them throughout the day- and they were always being the kind of family that I would respect. Kids were so well behaved and polite. Now we did see one group of real out there guys. (Pink Minnie ears and short shorts) But hey they were not bothering me and they were just having fun. I reallly had no problem with it. I was with my DH and my 4 year old son. He noticed the Minnie Ears guy but just thought it was funny. I actually thought it was less crowded on that day because I think people were avoiding the parks because of it.

We were there the week before Gay Week, and we overlapped many people on the "weekend before". The crowds both in the resorts and the parks definitely increased during that weekend. If that's any indication, then I think it's a week to avoid.

The "straight but not narrow" tee-shirt seems to be taking a stab at Christians. I'm sure the tee-shirt maker was refering to these verses aboaut the gates of Heaven: "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, adn only a few find it." (Matthew)

Gay days to bring crowds, filling the parks. Just like any other "event". I would avoid it if possible. Any time there are major numbers of people and you aren't part of it normally isn't too fun. I wouldn't go to Pleasure Island then either, but then again I don't normally so that isn't an issue.

I had friends who went (unknowinly) with young children. They found out once they got there. I think they even did MK on Saturday because MK is all they do (Crazy yes I know.) They didn't have any problems. Thought it would be a good idea not to wear red. They noticed you couldn't get anywhere near Country Bear though. I wonder why? They didn't see any questionable behavior (some holding hand etc..) Personally I don't think kids would see anything wrong with same sex couples holding hands.

However given the choice I would much rather be there on Gay days then Brazilian Tour Group days! :earseek:

We have been to WDW a few times and had our trip overlap with GayDays. One good thing to note is that if you're staying in a Resort Hotel, they usually give you the "world update" in your rooms at night, and in our case, at the GF we were told a few days ahead of time that the parks would be experiencing larger than normal volumes. They didn't come out (ha ha -- "Come out") and say "gay days" but at least folks get the option to plan alternate park days.

I would assume it refers to the phrase "narrow-minded", which is a very common phrase. Is that also inspired by the biblical passage? (asking in sincerity, not sarcasm, I was not familiar with the passage).

I have to agree with va32h, that the T-shirt refers to narrow-minded. I would never have thought to link it to that Bible verse.

It could also be a play on the phrase "staying on the straight and narrow", another common saying that few, if any, link to a Bible verse.

I dont understand why they have to have gay days. If all kinds of people with differences come to the park everyday why do they have to have gay days at all?

Why not have bi sexual day, Jewish Day, Polish Day, hillbilly day?...LOL

We have gay family and friends. They dont feel the need to have special days for there sexual orientation. I just dont see why it has to be pointed out.

Gosh, LauraAnn630, why do they need to have any conventions groups anywhere? Why do "they" need to have Night of Joy? Why do "they" need the Candlelight Processional...we certainly don't need to have peoples religious beliefs pointed out at a theme park, do we?

Why do they have Baptist Conventions, Plumbers Conventions, Video Store Owners Conventions, Golfing tours, marathons, Grad Nights, Association of Christian School Day (don't know if they still have that one, they had it at Disneyland while I went to Lutheran school)?

Gays Days is not a Disney sponsored event, and if you'd like to have Hillbilly Day, bi-Sexual Day, Jewish Day, or any other day, you are certainly WELCOME to organize one.

Sorry, I still do not see any reason in the world to have days dedicated to anyones sexual orientation.

We have gay family and friends. They dont feel the need to have special days for there sexual orientation.

Again, Disney has not "dedicated" a day to anyones sexual orientation. I'm sorry that you don't seem to understand that. Many things are celebrated throughout the year, all over the country, that folks may not "feel the need for."

And then you feel you must add the line "We have gay family and friends...they don't feel the need..." Well, maybe some of us DO feel the need to socialize in a safe, friendly atmosphere that Disney provides. Where we can enjoy the parks without being "looked down upon" for holding hands with our loved ones...do you ever hold your husband's hand in a theme park? Has anyone said to you "That's disgusting, I'll pray for you" for doing so? Or even simply picked fun at your expense for enjoying a family trip with your husband?

Gay Day started 15 years ago with a group of internet friends that decided to get together for a day at WDW and grew from there to what we see today.

I can see your point now! Im luckily surrounded by people that would never say anything like that about gay people. I forgot how homophobic people can be.

I agree with you - being from the northeast, we don't really run into as much homophobia as I think we would, say, down south. Being on the DIS reminds you of that, getting to experience that demographic slice of people. :)

But yeah, people are people, let's all go to WDW. :)

Ooh I think I'm going to start Polish Days.. break out the kilbasa!!!

don't laugh!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: i live in pittsburgh -- traditionally LOTS OF POLISH -- and there are several "polish day" events. and our local amusement park has italian day. maybe other days as well, but i'm italian so that's the one i know about. LOL

This whole topic that people are annoyed by Gay days just rubs me the wrong way! Why is this such an important issues to people? Don't they realize that there are so much more serious issues in this world that need ones time and effort? If gay couples/families want to go to Disney world to to have fun, why should it rub so many people the wrong way. And this religious stuff, god loves everyone, he created us all, we are all loved equally in his eyes. I have two DD's 5 and 7 if the "worst" thing they saw were two men/women kissing/holding hands I would consider that a good day. People lighten up, chill out, love one another and start worrying about the people out there that commit crimes and hurt others. Stacey2grls

i think to each his own and God bless, everyone knows these are family parks, and everyone no matter what or which type of family they belong to want a magical experience. I think things shoud be fine

Mmm..kabashi. :goodvibes My fiance's Polish, & I had that on the grill one day at his house - really good stuff! :teeth:

Onto the subject that everyone & their mother's talking about. Who cares if someone's gay/bi/whatever. You shouldn't "judge a book by its cover" so to speak. They're all in Disney just to have fun & enjoy themselves, so don't let a little thing like that spoil your vacation.

I'm a mormon, lots of ridicule and jokes. And ya know what it doesn't matter. I will be at Disney during gay days and its going to be just fine. I can't wait for my first trip and see the Mouse at Chef Mickey's. Giggle giggle!
