Those ear-bar piercings.....

Anyone have one, know anyone who has one / got one, etc, etc, etc.

Why do I ask? My 15 1/2 y.o wants one, and came to me when I was all drugged up from a migraine and stiff neck (remember a couple weeks ago) He approached me at my weakest, and since quite frankly, I dont care if he wants to mutilate his body - I agreed.

So, now the day is here - and Im reading about it. Sounds super painful, and GROSS! BLAH! Now, you'd think since he is a teenager and a thorn in my side, I'd enjoy the painful portion of it. Almost, passive agressive...since I cant poke holes in him when he mouths off, or text messages $75 over the normal phone bill, this would make up for it....but alas, Im worried. HOW painful?

Many of my friends have those, and I have one too.. only mine is vertical, not horizontal. I say let him go for it.. one of the 'holes' of mine is on top and it wasn't all too painful, just a pinch. Now, the one that goes through the bottom of my conch is a different story. That one hurt a bit! I have my conch pierced on my other ear as well and it didn't hurt the way that one did .. I suppose different spots on it will hurt worse. I have a few other piercings as well and ear piercings have never given me a problem. Just bring him to a reputable piercer and make sure he follows the aftercare instructions. Actually I think I might have a picture of my ear from around the time I got it done.. if I still do, I'll post it for you. Don't worry, an industrial (that's what it's called) is not a very painful piercing.

I am gonna let him go for it - I truly dont really care. Im more concerned that Ill have to take him to the Emergency Room after a day of him playing football, and he'll come home with that top chunk of his ear in his hand.

I shaved my head, pierced my ears allllllll the way around , in High School. If this is the least of my worries, Im pleased!

Eeew, eeew, eeew!! My ears hurt just thinking about that!!

I suppose, though, if he wants to do it and you don't mind, let him go for it. My only advice- KEEP IT CLEAN! TAKE CARE OF IT!! You definitely do not want an infection!!! The other "good" thing about a piercing is that it can be pretty easily removed at such time that the person decides they don't want it anymore (unlike a tatoo).

I never considered a standard industrial too rough a piercing, but I suppose everybody's pain tolerance is different. My vertical was a little ouchy, but not unbearable. Don't get me wrong, it won't tickle, and it will be sore for a while afterwards, but he should be fine.
