I just returned from the post office where I had to mail two pins out to DISers for the pin exchange. I picked up my little white box, put the pins in, labeled everything, and walked up to the counter. Immediately, I knew something was about to happen. This one employee there gave me a very hard time on Monday about mailing the pins and he was the one at the register.

I asked him if he could please put a piece of tape on the boxes so I was confident the pins would be secure. His reply? A long, cold stare and then the words, "Well....I am really being nice here by doing that because we are not supposed to put tape on boxes being mailed." My jaw dropped and I told him how every other employee has done that automatically in the past and it has not been a problem. He did not believe me and continued to give me major attitude!

What the *HECK* is wrong with this jerk? What are all of those tape dispensers in the office there for? Why do I constantly receive packages with tape on them?

Anybody else have an experience like this? I'm livid! :headache:

Actually, policies changed at the USPS... although they were more than happy to help tape up packages in the past, the new policy is that they cannot provide tape to postal customers, they cannot assist postal customers in packaging/taping their packages, and they no longer provide the Priority Mail tape that was available for no charge (like the boxes) in the past.

There are/were notices at our local post office to the above effect... had something to do with losing millions of $$ in providing free tape.

So, your postal worker is just doing his job.

I always go to the post office with my packages ready to mail. :confused3

I was told the same thing at the post office about two years ago. Luckily it wasn't the post office I usually frequent - they are much nicer at my hime post office.
It's all in the employee's attitudes. Our's isn't what it once was because our best clerk retired & moved south. I sure do miss her. She would always smile, ask about my kids...

Same here, I show up ready to go. But no need for the postal worker to be rude, though!

Let me add some other info to shed light on this situation.......

The boxes are sold at the post office and I knew they had extra small ones. Remember, I was sending a trading pin and the box was half the size of a paperback book.

When I was there on Monday, the woman at the counter taped without my asking.

Attitudes are not necessary.

The piece of tape I asked for was half an inch long. I think they can afford the ten cents. And, if not, there was no need for the nasty look or tone of voice. If he does not like his job, he should resign and go looking for one elsewhere.

I agree that the attitude was completely unnecessary. And if they don't want to give away tape for free, they should have an option for you to pay for it. The packaging store I sometimes use charges something like $.50 if they help you at all with packaging your box or give you tape. When I go to that place, I usually use UPS. The Postal Service needs to offer the same types of services at their offices since they're not doing very well right now.

Sorry about your experience.

It has been policy in our area for a long time that tape is not provied. I send everything priority anyway---and just use that tape when I need it.

He didn't have to be a meanie about it though.

Attitudes are often a matter of interpretation. Even the most perceptive person sometimes perceives affront when none is intended, especially when the person who allegedly is committing the affront is being placed in a difficult position, as in this case, of violating work rules imposed by their employer.

i was looking for quite another thread and the post office title caught my eye so i had to read it..(i work as a rural carrier in nebraska)
i will have to agree with the person who wrote just before me.. sometimes, rudeness is open to interpretation, and of course, it is so easy to remember that everyone is human with the foibles associated with that.. hungry, tired, waiting for cancer results, runaway kids/grands.. etc etc etc..
how many posts do we see that show how happy we were with the last grocery bagger, waitress, lawyer, etc.??
how many times does anyone tell that mailman thanks for putting my and only my mail in the mailbox? i can't believe that my address is 17007 and yet, somehow when my mom, dad, cousin, bank sent it to me at 1707 you managed to find a way to put it in the right slot??
just a thought.... not definitely stepping on major toes, or minor ones, for that matter... when (you, i , someone else fill in the blank) is gone, how many will notice? life is short... have a great day... :grouphug: kathye
