About W.I.S.H

Within the DISboards, there is a group of DISers that like to talk about getting healthy or staying healthy, and all of the things that entails. They are called W.I.S.Hers. On this thread, TXBelle (Heather) shares the history of W.I.S.H. and how it all began.

You are always welcome to post on the W.I.S.H boards and ask questions, or to offer advice for someone else. Once you've posted, you are automatically a member of W.I.S.H!

Within W.I.S.H there are smaller teams of about 20 people each. You do not have to be on a team to be a member of W.I.S.H and you do not have to be a member of W.I.S.H to be on a team. They are just a way for smaller groups of people to get to know each other and to offer more personalized advice and suggestions.

How can I join a team?

Right now, jmasgat (Maura) is coordinating the teams. Go to this thread and post that you would like to join a team. You might also like to mention if you are an experienced athlete or just starting out, if you are a runner, a walker or a biker or what your goals are. She will try to match you up with a team that will benefit from your current fitness levels and goals.

Maura maintains the team leaders and members and makes sure the numbers stay pretty even. She will decide when it is time to start a new team and will coordinate that effort.

About the Rebels

On February 7, 2009, windwalker asked for a volunteer to lead a new team he named Rebel Alliance. It didn't appear that there were many people eager to take on that job! Soon however, Suzann and scoolover (Scott) stepped up and offered to share the duties of heading up the new team. Back then, every team member had to announce their monthly miles and minutes and the team captain kept a team total.

Before long the team had 11 members and by June we were up to 14. One of the latest monthly threads was started in July of 2009 by Suzann until K80K (Katie) started one in September of that same year. October was skipped and a November thread was started by wdwprincess (Jane). By this time, most members of the team had drifted away. "Real life" got in the way, training slowed down, there was an injury... For whatever reason, it appeared that the Rebels had disbanded.

In January of 2010, deekaypee (Debra) started asking for opinions for the new year and scoolover (Scott) offered to re-start the Rebels. He started a thread asking if any past team members were interested in coming back, and a few did. Then jmasgat (Maura) started filling the team in with brand new people who were either new to W.I.S.H or were ready to join a team. The numbers rose quickly and before long the team had 20 members.

Because of personal reasons, scoolover (Scott) asked disney_mommy (Andrea) to take over as team captain in February 2010. She accepted and the team is in its current state.

Jen - You are such an amazing teacher. Those kids are going to remember you and what you've taught them for a long time, maybe forever. Who knows what they will accomplish thanks to your example.

Good luck with the job you are aiming for. Hope you get it.

Jen, if you'd like, I can track the mileage in the first post. I know there was a push to stop doing that a while back through all the teams, so we won't make it a team-wide thing, unless everyone wants that. Otherwise, we can do an unofficial optional thing.

Tiffany - Love the suit! It's great. I know you will do so amazing in your race on May 8th. You've trained so hard for it. You won't have any problem meeting your goals. But remember to have fun, too! You ROX!

Gretchen - You and your curly hair keep going. Though the weight loss may have slowed down, you are still making progress, just by keeping up with your exercise and healthy eating.

James - Glad you are still here. You don't have to talk, but let us know you're around every once in a while, especially if you have some advice or a question. We want to make sure everyone knows we are here for each other. 40 miles is great, nothing to be disappointed in!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I'm about to do some cleaning of the "craft room" to make room for the treadmill that is being delivered on Wednesday. I'm so excited! I just know that will make all the difference in my training. No more having to get dressed and drive 10 minutes to my gym, no worrying about the weather or the late hour and the safety of the streets. Woo hoo!

Andrea: How exciting to have your own treadmill. We have our own too and it really is convenient! Not as good as running outside but better than going to the gym for sure! And you can stay on as long as you like! My gym has a 20 minute limit if it's busy.

AFM: Last bike ride today! 14.3 miles followed by a 10 minute run. Terrible headwind on the way back. Mishap on the bike before I even got started. When the bike was on the car on the bike rack, the gear lever got pushed and then when I got on the bike and pushed off, that pedal dropped out from under me sending my left leg crashing into the ground and rolling the ankle. Ankle feels okay, but my left leg aches from the hip down. Hopefully, it will go away. I've taken some Advil and gotten on the foam roller and this is taper week, so I hope it will be okay. Bad timing, to be sure!

Tiffany, I'm getting so excited for your tri! I hope your leg heals quickly and you are 100% by the 8th. Can't wait to hear all about it.:cheer2:

Love the new thread name Andrea. Too cute!

Finished up half marathon number 18 yesterday. I started out not feeling well at all in the morning, but knew if I didn't at least try I was going to regret it so I climbed out of bed and went to the start. I felt better almost instantly as I started moving, but not 100%. My only goal was to make to to Walmart without getting swept. After Walmart, between miles 9 and 10, you are home free. I made it there with some time to spare, but was spent as the sun came out and heated up the already humid and warm air. Walked it into the finish chit chatting with a girl I had met trying to talk her into doing Disney has her first full.

Next week I am off of racing and then I have 2 more weekends, a week off, then 4 weekends, and then I rest till Disneyland. Oy! What have I done!?! LOL

Andrea – Thanks, I am going to try to check in more often. Unfortunately, it seemed more difficult last month.

Katie – Wow, you are amazing!

Jen – Good luck with the job. I hope you get it!

Tiffany – I hope you have a speedy recovery before the race! BTW, have a great and fun race!

AFM – I managed to get 14 miles in last week, even though I am still struggling with a breathing problem. Believe me, it has been unpleasant. I am going to stick it out though; I do not want to get behind on my marathon training. This week is a much needed cut back week.

I hope you are having a great day so far!

Happy May everyone. Just getting back into the groove of things. Didn't realize how much of a challange it would be after hurting my knee is the WDW marathon. I bit the bullet, bought 10 more sessions with my trainer at 24 hour and started back on the path to happiness and a cool 5th Anniversary Disneyland Half Marathon Medal.

After getting hurt, I took too much time off, didnt adjust my eating to accomidate the fact that I stopped running, and gained 14 pounds before I realized what I did.

The good news is I know I can get them off because I have before.

So I hope to be stopping in a lot more and continue to get inspired by the incredible group that are the REBELS!

-Pat

Pat – Welcome back!!! Sounds like you have healed, have a goal, and are back on track!

AFM – An ease 3 mile walk this morning before work.

Have a great day Rebels!!! :)

Katie - Glad you like the name. I had to think hard to come up with something!

Congratulations on #18! And I've been saying for a while that you're a crazy person! Now you finally see it, too!

James - Glad you stopped by to let us know how you're doing. We all know that sometimes other stuff gets in the way of the boards, but we're here whenever you can make it.

Congrats on 14 miles. That's pretty darn good for a week, especially with breathing problems! I hope you get well soon, and enjoy your cut back week.

Pat - I know exactly how you feel, I did the same thing after the Princess in March... except without the injury. :rolleyes1

But you've already taken an important step in getting back to the gym and signing up for more training sessions. You can do it! Are you signed up for any more races?

Good afternoon Rebels! Checking in with a 4 mile tempo run this morning. I have been concentrating on the quality of my workouts an rebuilding the base I lost during the winter months in hopes that I can increase my speed. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. High 50s, low 60s and crystal blue skies. My goal pace for my tempo miles was between 12 and 12:30 min/miles and I finished with them at 12:18.

Katie, Katie, Katie...:sad2: How can you run a half marathon practically every weekend and then say you lost base mileage during the winter? I hope to one day have your frame of mind, that's all I can say! ;)

I'm just so darn excited about getting my own treadmill today! I already have plans for breaking it in tonight.

Hi Rebels,

Katie – Great times!!!

Andrea – Congrats on the new treadmill. Have fun breaking it in!

AFM – Today is supposed to be cross training day, but I am going to be bad and call it a rest day.

It has been really crazy in my life this month and I have definitely had some ups and downs with my training so I am going to take some time to respond to everyone and then tell you all about my issues! :rotfl:

Andrea - I don't know if we need to really track mileage (unless people want to). I just thought it was kind of inspiring and cool to see where I was at and where others were at the end of the month. I think if people want to share it in a post, I think it would be motivating. If people don't want to...that is fine as well.

I am excited to hear about your treadmill!

Tiffany - Can't wait to hear about your race! I am getting so excited for you! Every time I read about your training, I was impressed with all you had done to prepare for this. I know that you had a little mishap but I hope you are totally healed after taking it easy these past few days. You will do great!

Katie - You are AMAZGING! I can't imagine doing my first half marathon...let alone 18 of them! I would love to hear more about your tempo runs if you want to share. I have read a bit about tempo running but have not tried it yet. I am thinking that I need to learn more.

James - How is the breathing situation? I have really been struggling with it as well and it makes it so hard. Good for you at getting in your 14 miles last week!

Pat - Hello! I think your money on the trainer is money well spent. I am considering getting a trainer for a short bit because I think I need someone to give me a swift kick to get moving a bit more. I bet your 14 pounds will be gone in no time once you get going with everything again!

AFM - Well, I should probably tell you all that on Monday I declared that I was done running...forever! I decided that I hate the sport and that it is not worth it. I threw a total stink and explained how I had better things to do with my time. I had a huge fit, yelled at my DH, stopped in the middle of my run and walked with a lot of anger to my steps. After walking 3 miles...I decided it was time to run again. :rotfl2:

Here are all my excuses:
1. My allergies are making it too hard to run.
2. My shin splints still bother me.
3. DH runs way faster then me and I can never keep up with him.
4. I am just too tired.
5. We have a crazy, busy May and there is no time to fit long runs in.

I could go on and on and I did go on and on to DH. I think I was just so tired and honestly a bit annoyed with DH who is 6'5" and has super long legs that can run like the wind some days. I just was feeling sorry for myself that he has been running with ease and I have been struggling. I have felt bad that running has felt like such a chore to me. It used to be that I felt great finishing a run but I haven't been getting that good feeling lately. I used to only think about time in terms of the fact that I knew I was going to run for a set amount of time but lately it seems like DH and I are always running to beat the time we did the day before and now it seems like so much work.

So, now that I have rambled on and on and told you all of my struggles...I am committing to figure out how to change things up and get out of my running slump. I don't hate running and I love knowing that I can run distances I never thought I would be able to conquer. I am strong and know I can do this...I just have to get past this mental block I have been having and stop making excuses.

Hope everyone else is doing great!
Jen

Hi Everyone - I'm TERRIBLE at this keeping up thing. But I'm gonna give it another try.

Katie - Seriously???? That's all I'm gonna say about your schedule. But you're amazing.

Jen - I hear ya. I've had that block for a while now. Just keep plugging away and something will inspire you again.

Pat - Welcome back. Glad your healing and have a great head about losing weight. I am sure you'll be successful.

James - sorry about your breathing problems. Hope you get through it with ease.

Andrea - Enjoy your treadmill. I wish I had room for one in my place. I feel like running and watching TMZ would just be the ideal situation for me.

As I said I'm terrible at keeping up with this. Mostly because I haven't really been running. However, I joined a Galloway group and we are starting this weekend. So I'm "officially" in training now for the wine n dine half. Did 3 miles last night - it was beautiful here in NYC. I started running one year ago this month (May 12th). I remember this weather and how I LOVED running. Last night felt that way. I'm thinking that going into summer and having the group is really going to keep me going. Hope to be talking to all of you more regularly.

Jen – I feel your pain. The higher mileage as you get ready for your Half is very exhausting. Trust me, it is all worth it when you get the medal around your neck.

Personally, I would probably slow down (meaning slower pace) a bit on the long runs, but it is still important to get you mileage in. That might help you recover from the exhaustion. Plus, I am finding that one day a week of speed work is sufficient, too much speed work seems to lead to over training.

Thanks for asking about my breathing. I have my good days and bad days. My wife keeps telling me to do my breathing treatments religiously so I can get back to normal, but I have been pretty bad. That stuff makes me feel funny, however it does help short term and probably long term if it is used correctly.

Jane – Welcome back!!! Thanks for the well wishes.

Katie; Your schedule make me tired!

James: Enjoy your rest day!

Pat: I'm going to the Disneyland half as well. Welcome back to the Rebels.

Jen: I know every excuse in the book! Everyone thinks I love to work out, but the truth is, I don't really enjoy the day-to-day drudgery of it, but I love the self-esteem boost from completing a race! Then it's worth it, but when you're in the thick of it, it's hard! If I think too long about it, I'll talk myself out of any workout. Just put your clothes on and go, try not to think too long about it! That's why I have to have a race on the docket, otherwise I just wouldn't work out!

Jane: Good for you for joining a group. The weather sounded perfect for running. I'd love to do the Wine and Dine, but it's not in the cards this year.

AFM: I've been off with my sore leg ( it's getting better) and having a little taper madness. I vacillate between being really excited and confident and WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!? WHY DID I SIGN UP FOR THIS!?? I keep checking the race website and the athlete's guide was supposed to be posted and still hasn't been put up. I hope the race goes smoothly from an organizational standpoint. I fly out on Friday morning. :scared1:

Hi Rebels.
I hope everyone's week is going well.
If I think too long about it, I'll talk myself out of any workout. Just put your clothes on and go, try not to think too long about it!
Wise words Tiffani; I wholeheartedly agree. It is so easy to make excuses. But, once I am out and going I feel so much better. And, when the workout is done, I feel really good about doing it. I keep those thoughts going so that I can reach my daily goal.
BTW, Tiffani, pixie dust for this weekend pixiedust: I know you will do great and all your hard work will pay off. :thumbsup2

Good Morning Rebels!!!

Tiffani, here is some more pixie dust for this weekend. pixiedust: I am with Gretchen, you have worked hard for this race. You will do great!!!

AFM – I did my 3 mile walk at the suggested easy pace. I am starting to get some energy back during this cutback week. Hopefully, I am feeling a little better next week so I can enjoy the training a little more.

Good news, I am coughing more today (yeah, who would have thought coughing is good) and whatever is hanging out in my lungs seems to want out now, yahoo! I can’t wait to get back to 100%.

Have a wonderful day Rebels!

Good Morning Rebels -

Let me start off by wishing Tiffany and Manda a great weekend! I'm sure you will both do great. Just remember we're all there with you in spirit. :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

James - Glad to hear that your cough. I understand what you are saying. Sometimes you just need to cough it out.

Last night I did another 3 miles. Nice and easy. Great NY running again. tomorrow we are supposed to have a storm. But I'm crossing my fingers that we won't. First group run in the a.m. (can't believe I'm going to get up that early on a Saturday.)

Also, Andrea, can you please add me to the Wine N Dine Run, and also the 2011 half.

Thanks! Have a great weekend!
