So how come Splash Mountain will be closed when I'm there in March but Kali River Rapids won't? They're both water rides.

It doesn't have anything to do with water. It is just when they plan to do maintenance on Splash.

It's because Splash got her refurb FP+ reservation in before Kali did.

Good news though, is that Kali got better Fantasmic seats for her family!

:thumbsup2

WDW does maintenance on all of the rides on a regular basis. It has nothing to do with the type of ride,, whether water or not. All rides need regular maintenance. You can even check the refurbishment schedule in advance.

It appears that Splash goes down for refurb every January, sometimes into February or March. The one recent exception was 2012, when BTMRR was down for an extended refurb and they left Splash open.

I really had my fingers crossed that since last year's Splash refurb was a long one, this year's would be short, but no such luck. I think I'm going to have to find another time of year to go if I ever want to ride Splash again.

It goes down the same time EVERY year. Has nothing to do with the temperature.

Splash in particular requires a big rehab every year due to the shear number of animatronics, moving parts, and the size of the ride, that all have to contend with all that water.

And it NEEDS it. 5 trips in 3 years and only ONCE during all of those trips, with multiple rides on multiple days each trip, has every feature on the ride been working.

Many people don't realize just how long of a ride Splash is and how much track is laid out there. Most concentrate on the one big drop and think is just around the corner when it's quite a distance from the beginning. I've been in the logs many times with first-timers and they don't really relax at all waiting for that big drop and they have a long wait for it. And even once that's over, there's more sedate traveling. The entire ride portion is slightly over ten minutes and you are riding a track the entire time. That's a lot to clean and it, of course, needs to be drained to clean it.

That's just the track. As mentioned, there are a ton of animatronics that need to be tended to, touched up, etc.

January/February might not work out for some but it's done in a slower time period so the vast majority of guests will be able to enjoy during spring breaks, summer, holiday, etc.

I guess when I ride, I don't really use my time to analyze if every single feature is working or not. I just relax and enjoy the meaning behind the attraction and focus on that.

When your child essentially forces you to ride 5 times in a row, you start to notice these things. Of course, the way it's set up now our days of 5 times in a row are likely over, but I digress....

I'm here now. Wait time last night was 5- 10 min. standby. The ride was half empty. You could have ridden it 20 times in a row if you really wanted to...

Get yer banjo on! I keep the 7-minute version on my MP3 player to perk me up at work!

It's actually quite logical that January and February would be the months that the close down Splash and other water related rides. They also close, on rotation, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Although Florida doesn't get the sustained low temps. that northern states do, they still have some chilly cold days. No one wants to get wet on those days and the ridership is very light. That would be the time of year when it will effect fewer guests so that's when they do it. So it does have something to do with temperature.

They skipped a year a little while back and pieces started falling off the ride. Maintenance is a good thing. It's a bad thing only if that is when you planned your vacation during that time.

False. We went in January 2012 and it was closed then too. I was bummed it will be closed yet again on our upcoming trip but I'm pregnant so I can't ride it anyway :). My son will be bummed though because he's finally tall enough.

Splash may have been broken or something but it did not close down for a refurb in January or February 2012 during the Big Thunder refurb/update.
