This Isn’t Turkey!?! Part 2 Magic Kingdom and tears

If you have missed any days please see my Trip Report Index

Wednesday 21st June 2006

Me, Sarah, 29 (turn 30 in Florida) – only adult planner
DH, Craig, 32 loves holidays, hates planning
DD, Holly, age 9 loves rides and hoping to try Kraken, loves planning
DD, Rowan, age 7 never been on any big rides, fearless (or so she says)

Our first full day. We girlies were all awake at 4.45am. Holly and Rowan got dressed and while Holly did some colouring Rowan went back to sleep! We finally could not wait any longer and we were all ready to rock n roll for 7.30am complete with cooling neckties :cool2: and Brita filter bottles. The plan for today was to get our Grab n Go breakfast from the hotel and head off to the park asap. However on collecting our brekkie – we each got a cup of orange juice, a muffin and a piece of fruit – we decided to head to IHOP for a more American fare. Rowan however decided to eat a muffin and spat it out saying it tasted gross. Turned out it had walnuts in it and she is allergic to nuts. It is not a severe allergy thank goodness but I have a ‘bad parent’ moment.

AT IHOP I had a breakfast sampler, Holly had a Rooty Jnr, Rowan chose a Short Stack and Craig had a Country Steak & Cheese. We scoffed the lot except for Rowan. She only ate 1 pancake out of 3!! She is the only one of us who can stop eating when her tummy tells her, the rest of us keep going until we are fit to burst and we waddle uncomfortably out of the restaurant vowing never to eat so much again!!

We decided to chicken out of taking the I4 so head along Sand Lake Road to Apopka Vineland Road. We soon realise that sign posting is not easy to spot amongst all the hotel / restaurant signage. We are very excited when we enter WDW property and positively beaming when we pass through the toll plaza. We park in Pluto 23 and get on a tram. We chose the ferry to cross Seven Seas Lagoon which gave us time to view the castle for a while. It was just like on TV – a phrase we would use a lot. Once through the turnstiles and into Main Street we were gob smacked. We walked up the street soaking in the atmosphere when we heard some shouting. Looking over we saw a woman in period costume shouting to the Mayor nearby, ‘She’s naked… look Mayor she’s got no clothes on she’s naked!!’ We saw that she was pointing to a very embarrassed 20-something girl in a bikini top! :rotfl2:

The choice was to head for Space Mountain or Thunder Mountain first but as this was Rowan’s first ‘big’ coaster we did not want to scare her so we headed for Thunder Mountain. We walked straight on. It was a fantastic ride and both girls loved it, so much so that we went straight on again, this time with hands in the air! Think they are going to be thrill-seekers like their folks. Next up was Splash Mountain despite the fact that we all agreed that we did not want to do water rides until last. However we were right beside it and thought ‘Why not?’ We got fastpasses for Splash Mountain for an hour away and joined the standby queue planning to have two rides in a row. This ride was very good too but we should have waited until later as before we had even been down the drop we were soaked. It happened when we were on the outside part of the ride and another log went down the drop! We got soaked! We all agreed that it was a good ride but 3 out or the 4 of us didn’t want to go on again even though our fastpasses were now valid so I gave them to a family of 4 who were away to get pastpasses. They said it made their day but one person was not happy – Rowan! She huffed as she had wanted to go on again but that was because she was the only one that was reasonably dry!! Her face was a picture – we decided to call this her ‘Disney face’ and it featured a lot on our holiday.

After drying ourselves as best as we could (in my case wringing out my clothes) we headed to the Haunted Mansion. I love these spooky rides. We waited less than 5 mins and were soon having a great time on the ride. We all loved the ghosts especially at the end!

Keeping up a good pace we headed to Mickey’s Philharmagic which was astounding! Words cannot express how much we enjoyed this especially me and Craig. We both said afterwards that we were a bit emotional during the show. It was something I will never forget and will treasure the memory always.

Following the show we had just seen we went on Peter Pan which I must say we found a bit naff with the exception of Rowan who loved flying over the city. It was nice to have been on it but not one to go on again in a hurry.

Winnie the Pooh was much the same. Rowan and I loved bouncing with Tigger but Craig and Holly were less impressed. No smell of honey either? The girls spent their Disney Dollars (which a kind Dibber had brought back for me) in the shop and Holly bought a cuddly Rabbit and Rowan a cuddly Pooh.

Winnie the Pooh was out and about so we queued for a photo. He was very taken with the girls new cuddly friends!!

A late lunch was at Pinocchio Village Haus and was OK for park food. $36.02 Had real problems getting a seat though and there was a stand-off between me and a 5 year old for a table. I was there first – honest!!

Rowan decided that she really wanted to go on Dumbo. So in blistering heat Craig and the girls joined the queue. I bought a raspberry freeze drink for them, told them I needed to visit a restroom and disappeared, LOL. I had a great time looking around the shops etc and was back to watch them have fun. I lazily leaned on the railings and burnt my arms – ouch! As the girls came off the rain started and boy did it rain. Huge fat raindrops and loads of them. Next came the lightning and thunder. It was great to watch it pass overhead.

Our next ride was Buzz Lightyear. It was great fun but Craig thrashed us girlies getting a score that beat ours combined! Oh dear.

Please let us out - we haven't been on Space Mountain yet!!

Headed over to the Indy Speedway and we were beginning to struggle. It was soo hot and the fumes from the cars were making me feel a bit nauseous. I think we were all getting tired too. Once on it was OK but the girls definitely enjoyed it more than me or Craig.

Our last ride for the day was Space Mountain. We waited a long time in the stand by queue but for most of the time we were in the shade which was bliss. Rowan was nervous so a seating plan was devised. Holly in the front, Rowan next followed by me, and Craig at the back. It was fantastic. The theming and the ride were perfect. It was so much fun. I screamed all the way around! We all agreed that this was our favourite of the day.

We headed back to the car discussing our day and how to get back hone – as we now call the hotel. In the end we went on the I4 and it was a doddle. I was so much quicker then our route in the morning.

We were so tired when we parked up at the hotel that we only just managed to navigate the store across the road. It was a mixture of all shops and had a ‘minimarket’ section but it was a rip off! $6 for a box of kiddie cereal and $4 for a large carton of fruit juice. We bought what we needed and vowed never to be back.

After eating (can’t remember what) we were getting ready for bed and I just burst into tears. :confused3 :sad1:I was crying from park overload / heat / exhaustion and who knows what else. Everyone crept into bed and left me to cry myself out – it was not a nice way to end the day.

Lights out everyone and cheer up – things do improve!

Tomorrow – Seaworld and a very brave girl!

Great stuff! :goodvibes I didn't expect you to be the one in tears even tho' I always experience emotional overload in WDW...

great day

I know what you mean about the crying session, happens to me on holiday too, I think it's a combo of excitement, exhustion etc.

I understand that emotional overload :)

Sounds like a great day:goodvibes , the same happend to us on Splash Mountain :rotfl: absolutely soaked right at the beginning!. Hope you felt better after a goodnights sleep :)

We always seem to get soaked by the other logs on splash mountain.

I am usually in tears when we enter Disney property and go under the WDW sign and Wishes gets me every time! ;)

I suffered from those 'first day tears' last year too. What a good first day, though.

Sara. :)

Sarah, I think you are doing really well. The first time we went to Florida, I cried all the way through the airport, all the way to the hotel and all the way through tea - it was just the shock of the heat and of being somewhere further away than I have ever been before. It wasn't long until I was raring to go though. You got loads done on your first day. And yes, I have experienced that kind of soaking on Splash too!
