This is us..

Another detail that makes no sense... why would Kevin have to go to store ON Thanksgiving day for the hot dogs and saltines? Wouldn't that have been picked up on the Thanksgiving meal grocery shopping trip?

Maybe because the meal was thrown together at the last minute originally? That's just my two cents on it. Plus, up here, nothing is open on Thanksgiving except sev and gas stations. He'd really be sticking to the original if he tried it last minute here lol

Who knows.

But what if it was part of the tradition. The last minute buy/addition just like it was that night.

I find it extremely sad that Rebecca never rebuked her mother when she told Randall to step out of pictures of "the twins," but I didn't find that completely unrealistic. She couldn't stand up for herself or even for her favored son in front of her parents. As the kids said, she became a completely different person around them. I did find it unrealistic, though, that Jack wouldn't have had some very strong words, not only about the way that the treated Randall but also about they way that they treated Rebecca.

I agree! It wasn't like they suddenly decided to recreate that meal. It was part of the traditions, so they would have bought those supplies ahead of time. I think it was just to kind of keep us wondering what was going on and how hot dogs and saltines related to Thanksgiving, like when he sent the girls up for picnic blankets. But it didn't ring quite true.

I could be wrong but I think he was going to the gas station for these things just like when they were kids. What grocery store is open Thanksgiving?

edit...lol we were all writing at the same time

Holy cow, I totally agree! I totally missed that part last night, but I am appalled hearing it now. I have two bio kids and one who was adopted, and if any family member dared to say something like that they would no longer be a part of our lives. With as strong willed as Kate's character is, I have a really hard time believing she would stand for that either and even ATTEMPT to spend Thanksgiving with these people
They made it clear early on that she had a hard time standing up to her Mother. That's why the phone call was such a breakthrough.

I thought of a new thing. - In the previews for next week, it showed young Randall asking about his birth parents and Jack and Rebecca talking. Do you think she told Jack what she knew, and convinced him to keep quiet, or do you think she never told him either?

(I personally think she never told anyone.)

I don't think she told Jack.

Our Wegmans is open until 4pm on Thanksgiving. Our Price Chopper is open until 3:30 pm, and I'm not sure what the hours are at Weis.

But maybe it is tradition to pick those up last minute at the gas station. That would definitely fit.

My feeling is that Jack did not know.

I am devastated knowing we will be losing William soon. I love his character more and more each week.

Next week looks good, grown-up Randall was talking to Jack! Must be a dream, but still, I can't wait!

I loved seeing where all the Thanksgiving traditions came from, it was so sweet. I was like "why on earth is Randall sending Kevin to the store for hot dogs and saltines?" Then it was interesting to see that they had to walk 3.4 miles as kids to the gas station, so that is why they do the 3.4 mile hike.

That said, I wonder if they should keep these traditions going. I mean it was probably fine when they were all younger and after Jack dies (we don't know how old the kids were at the time of Jacks death, but it was at least after high school since we saw them last week in hs), it may have helped them to re-live that iconic Thanksgiving for a while, but now that they are grown, Randall is married, has kids, Rebecca re-married etc. It seems like maybe they could stop some of the traditions (like the pilgrim hat, hot dogs and saltines, yarn throwing, Rebecca saying word for word what Jack said that night) and make new traditions with the new members of the family. I don't know, but it just seemed like they were so intent on reliving it exactly as it happened word for word, minute to minute instead of maybe taking a few of the highlights as an homage to Jack, (like the hike and the movie) and starting new traditions that would have include and have meaning to Beth, the kids, Miguel, and whoever Kevin and Kate wind up with.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was cute, just like they were trying too hard to recreate that day years ago.

I think it's because they never really enjoyed Thanksgiving until that night. I wonder if they've been recreating it since that year or started recreating after they all grew up. Beth and the kids seem to be into into it though.

Kevin and Randall really don't like Miguel. I wonder if Kate feels the same way. I wonder if he moved in too quickly on Rebecca after jack died.

I can't wait to find out all the answers. I really want to know how and when Jack died and how Rebecca and Miguel ended up together.

Unlike some others, I think that not only did Jack know but that he was the one who pushed to keep it quiet. He might have thought it would be a barrier to Randall's sense of inclusion in the family to have another "dad". I think in the present that Rebecca might be torn between falling on her sword to keep Randall's memories of Jack intact vs coming clean about his role to help salvage anything she can with her relationship with Randall.

All conjecture, of course.

The only unrealistic thing that stuck out to me was the fact that they were still prepping vegetables that late in the game. Our thanksgiving dinners were very routine, like theirs, and the veggies were ready to go into the oven, the potatoes peeled and quartered, and ready to boil, the day before. And we didn't have a 3 mile hike.

That would be interesting, but I don't think it happens that way because of next week's preview. Jack and Rebecca are talking and Jack says something like, "maybe we could find his family, maybe it would help fill the void he is feeling." Rebecca is sitting on the bed looking very pained. In that scene it appears that Jack wants to find Randalls birth family and Rebecca is horrified because she has kept the fact that she already knows William a secret.

Who knows though, maybe Jack did know, previews can be very deceiving.

I thought she said she would speak to her again about it.
