This is Us- Season six

I loved that episode and it’s one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. It’s one of the most fair, honest and realistic depictions of divorce I’ve seen on tv. I’m usually not a fan of Kate but I really grew to respect her during this episode. I also like the journey Toby went on and I’m glad he ended up happy.

As for Phillip, I get it after this episode. He really seems to understand and respect Kate and they share a lot of mutual interests and passions. I love that she married someone that loves music as much as she does. He also understands what Jack needs and really loves both kids.

Really good episode! Sad to see the end of Katoby but it was definitely time. I’m not sure if they played up Kate being a naggy, witchy wife, but she definitely was one in the beginning of the episode. She was on him for every little thing.

It really struck a nerve when they showed an even more aged version of Rebecca. :(

Philip really grew on me this episode. I’m glad they’re making him likeable. He really loves the kids.

I missed seeing Sophia, too. That engagement sure answered some questions.

I will always have a soft spot for Toby and really hope he doesn’t spiral with his depression. He looks like he’s happy though with his new girlfriend/wife.

I didn’t comment on last weeks episode but I find it funny how the Pearson’s love to be an ideal family, but also love to have messy fights on the lawn (Kevin and Randall had a huge fight on the front lawn too).

I didn't like it. So much in so little time. I get that's how this show does it sometimes, but this was just too much for me crammed together with no time to process.

It also seems to me that there are too many easy "happily ever afters" with some of these characters. It's pretty clear Madison is living happily ever after with her non-Kevin husband. Kate is going to live happily ever after with Phillip. And Toby is going to live happily ever after with his non-Kate.

I didn't buy Toby giving Kate that ultimatum in an earlier episode, and I didn't buy his last ditch effort to keep her in this one. Even considering him not wanting to embrace his new life. That's not the Toby who went off to SF and thoroughly embraced his new job and friends. And are we to believe that Toby's depression was never an issue through the breakdown of his marriage?

And I'm sorry, but Kate took a stand with Toby over not wanting to move partly because Jack couldn't learn a new house, and now he lives in 2 houses. And now spends the day at school. More unfamiliar surroundings to learn.

There was an episode several seasons ago now where, in a flash-forward, we saw Toby in bed, debilitated by depression, and Kate trying to cajole him into getting up to take his meds. We never saw a continuation of that scene or the full context of it. I guess they decided not to develop that particular story line. :confused3

I liked how they flipped back and forth between the time surrounding the divorce and Kate and Phillips relationship in the current timeline. Liked how they showed us something (like them singing "I get knocked down" at the engagement party) then showing us the background (them sining that song at Karaoke and Philip trying to cheer Kate up after signing the divorce papers). Showed us how the relationship developed and how Kate and Toby eventually became great coparents.

Was hard to watch though. The whole explanation about Philip and his ex with the infertility, the fight, the death etc That could have been a whole episode. Made me like him more to hear his background. Was sad to see Rebecca declining. Next week will be tough, I am already sad for Miguel and what he is going through with Rebecca. Hard to see someone you love decline.

I agree that the flipping to so many different points in time was tough to follow at times.

Can we assume that the Kate / Toby / Phillip storyline is mostly done now? I know next week looks like it picks up at Kate's wedding, but there's not much left to cover with Kate now, is there?

I think so. I think the next episodes may focus on Rebecca and Miguel I am guessing. I think we are done with the big 3's stories.

Me too. I didn't need it to be linear, but that was too much for me.

Yes.

-------------

But the again, people do that in real life. They squawk about what won't work/can't be and then accept it when push comes to shove or it works for their personal needs.

Not necessarily. We could jump back into early post-divorce at any point.

I get that. But she didn’t squawk and then do it. She squawked, blew up her life, then did it.

I get that some might indeed still do that. But I didn’t like it as a plot line.

That was emotionally draining and so well acted. I don't know how I'll make it through the last six episodes 😭 definitely going to need a box of tissues with me each week!

There’s only six episodes left??? I’m not ready for it to end lol

Toby showed Kate that he had set his house up like hers as much as possible to make it easier for Jack to navigate.

I think they may still delve into what happened in the approximately 16 months they were in therapy. Maybe the depression is what made him agree to the therapy?

I liked last night's episode although I agree it did tend to, at least, give the illusion that all ended up with "happily ever after" and how often does that happen?

Toby showed Kye that he had set his house up like hers as much as possible to make it easier for Jack to navigate.
Then they could have set up a new place in SF like the old one too. For so many reasons this whole story just doesn't seem to work in my head.

Random thoughts as I watch a second time:

When they come home and ask each other about their day, Toby pretends his was great, but Kate can tell he doesn't mean it and hides that hers actually was great. - So neither is getting to share their real feelings.

I loved Phillip's proposal! ...especially that he involved the kids.

When the therapist suggests they have dinner, they did the same thing with their jobs as in the other scene. And why did Kate start talking about the kids!?! She was definitely criticizing Toby. And what he said about the "snot-grabber" was so much more mature. But then he turned around and brought big Jack into it - again, why then?

Little Jack broke my heart with the line about them having to stop yelling and get Boba Fett out of the toilet. I definitely think a lot of kids do do things like that, for that very reason, but to have him say it right out - I think that might be what really made Kate decide it was over.

On a lighter line - I loved the "British people don't yell..." bit at the bar. 🤣 The elevator was hilarious, too. I like that there was some comic relief in such a heavy episode.

Then they went right for the Kleenex again with the story of Phillip's first marriage... 😪. It's a roller coaster with these writers (in an good way.)

And Toby begging Kate to change her mind was just gut-wrenching. She was right about the reasons things had gotten better with them apart - though I did fleetingly wonder why she couldn't have given him "space to figure out your thing with them" (the kids) before. But I still felt so sad for him!

The flirting in the coffee shop was cute, and I liked the implication of happy endings for all when they flashed forward to Jack's gig. It's TV - we want happy endings!

Thank you for reminding me about that scene. It made me laugh out loud when I saw it but then when the night was over I couldn't remember what scene made me laugh cuz so many made me cry!

I also loved when Kate was telling Toby their story wasn't over. Made me sad, but still it was sweet. I loved the scenes at the end with grown up Jack saying, "you're both here" the night of the concert. I just with it ending with Kate and Toby together.
