This morning I gave Destiny her last prescribed doses of Benadryl and prednisone for the allergic reaction she had. Tonight her entire face is covered in itchy hives.

I just gave her another dose of Benadryl, but this is so frustrating not knowing what is causing her to react. We have switched detergents as of Wednesday. I don't know if it is a food or what!

Her pediatrician didn't refer her to an allergist, but I think Tuesday I am going to call and ask him to.:(

Awww, poor thing :( I know how frustrated you feel, been there.
I hope you find your answers quickly with an allergist. Good luck and let us know

Kristy, I've only had hives a few times and I feel so bad for Destiny. They are awful! Poor baby :(

Watch her close if they seem to be spreading rapidly you'll need to go back to the ER. You can also give her over the counter Benadryl, it isn't as strong but for her would probably be more than enough.

When you call the Dr ask about an epi-pen too. They should be able to get you one. Sometimes the insurance on them is strange because they are considered a durable medical product. When I've gotten them it takes a few calls to find out how the insurance will cover them. They do but sometimes different than a regular prescription. That will just be an added measure of having something on hand just in case she has a reaction that is worse.

PD and {{HUGS}} to you and Destiny. I hope they find out what she is allergic to. Hives are horrible to have especially when you're 6. :(

Wow, that's awful. Allergies can be pretty rough and prednisone....not a fun drug to have to take. Don't be surprised if Destiny (what a beautiful name!) get's a little irritable while on that stuff. Lots of side effects, but the drug works very well for allergic conditions. Is there any sign of asthma or rhinitis? It's VERY important to watch out for wheezing and to take her to an ER right away if that were to happen.

She needs an allergist right away. If she took her last dose of prednisone this morning and is already getting sick again, she really needs some help. She probably needs to be on an antihisamine like Allegra. The most important thing is determining what she is allergic to and an allergist will do skin testing, which is relatively painless. My daughter just had it done last month. It was very easy. One important fact about skin testing...you have to be off all antihistimines for a few days before you get tested!

Allergies can come on suddenly. You can be perfectly ok with something all your life and then, boom, out of nowhere you're allergic to it. I was midly allergic to cats until I got pregnant...then I developed severe asthma. You just never know. So you must look at everything in your daughter's environment as the potential culprit, even if she never had a problem before.

A few questions...do you have cats, dogs, mice or rats, birds, or any other furry or feathery pet? Is Destiny coming into contact with excessive dust? People with dust allergies can get nasty hives from it! Is she around mold or mildew? Like in a damp basement with carpeting that she may play on? Animals, dust and mold are the most common household allergens. When I was a kid, I got hives from playing on the grass and we discovered that it was the fertilizer I was allergic to. There are so many things that can cause allergies...it's a tough situation to be in. I hope you are able to figure it out. The best of luck to you and Destiny!

No animals, seaotter. The only dampness is in the basement and she doesn't go down there.

The benadryl seems to help for like 2 hours. Today she is saying her stomach and throat seem "throw uppy" so I don't know.

Kristy,

What about something innocuous like air freshner? Have you changed toilet paper to something with perfume? Perfume and fragrances are among the worst triggers for allergies and asthma. My DNephew has asthma and one whiff of perfume gives him hives and can bring on an attack. Try using ALL Free laundry detergent and if you like, both Snuggle and Downy make fragrance free/Dye free fabric softners. DD has extremely sensitive skin and I have to be so careful with her or she gets an excema outbreak. ITA with the other posters, get a referral and get to an allergist. BTW, the "throw uppy" feeling is probably from post nasal drip. Mucus accumulates and drips down her throat and makes her nauseous. That happens to me when my sinuses get clogged, no fun. Good luck to your little sweetheat.

I'd be on the phone to an allergist too 6 time momma. I feel for your DD. My allergies to cats, dust/mites & pollen came out of nowhere in the summer of 1999.

One thing I have noticed, but maybe i'm super sensitive, is that if I'm around a particle of clothing or blankets that came in contact with cat hair, it continues to make me react. Like when my kids come back from a house they've played in with cats, it gets on their clothes or sleeping bag, etc. and I have to remove them and wash them in hot water right away. My eyes immediately itch and swell and I blow my nose and sneeze straight for hours.

Do you have new carpeting? Did you have the carpets/furniture cleaned recently? New vehicle? a new plant in the house?

I feel SO sorry for her, I hope you can find out real soon what's causing this.

I hope you can figure out what is causing the hives.

I don't know if there is a pediatric Zantac dosage but the one and only time I've ever had hives I was given benadryl and Zantac.

Apparently the Zantac blocks the alpha sites and the benadryl blocks the beta sites? Or vice versa?

I don't know but it worked and it worked quickly. I went to the ER and had ivs but they told me to keep oral benadryl and Zantac at home just in case it happened again.

I still don't know what caused mine but when the hives got into my throat I decided to go to the ER. This was about two years ago.
